I want to take an image/backup of my windows partition that is running on intel matrix raid1, I have 3 partitions (2xraid1 and 1xraid0) over 2 drives.
True image will only take an image of an entire drive, not just 1 partition.
I think disk director will do it, but the trial version won't actually perform any tasks.

Is there any free software that will do it? Or any trial software that may do it?

I tried the 2010 Plus pack boot CD, also think I tried the 2010 trial. I read on the acronis forum that it will take a partition image but only if you do a backup of the image to a file, then restore the file to the target partition. Since I don't have a large enough spare HDD it's not possible to do use this method.

You cannot use the clone feature because TrueImage only clones at disk level--not partition level.

You can however, accomplish the same by creating a disk option backup and then restoring only the xp partition to the new drive.

Perform the restore when booted from the TI Rescue CD and disconnect the source drive before first bootup following the restore.

Your best chance of success is to put the target in its intended boot position before the restore.

I'm confused about what you're trying to achieve now. What do you want to do with the backup if you don't have enough space for it anywhere?

I want to clone my windows partition to a backup HDD so if I ever need to, I can either copy the image back to my raid, or just run my system from the backup image on the backup drive, or just be able to access any files I want to on the backup image drive.
If I were to create a backup file [which I presume true image does, using the method described on their forum?], and store that on my backup HDD, I wouldn't be able to boot it or access it without imaging it back to another drive [assuming my raid drives were broken].

Taking a backup file, then imaging it to my backup drive would require 3 drives/partitions. Original XP, temporary storage of the backup file, and my backup drive to deploy the image to, if I understand it correctly?
I want to just directly image it.
