But was querying about MBR and booting his system after a backup/restore, I think it would be safe to ensure he was doing a correct backup otherwise if he knew it worked he would not be asking, no?

Glad to see this post has raised some interest
I appreicate everyones help really, an I will be trying out the backup & Restore later tonight hopefully if I get some time, I have 2 x 1TB drives, ones not been installed yet, so its a good way to check if it does what I would like it to do

using acronis for anything but an OS backup is pointless
7zip & robocopy do a better job for user files
Is coming up with pointless arguments a habit of yours?
Regardless of whether Acronis is a good option for data backup the OP still does not want to accidentally go through that section of the software instead of the disk imaging section. Considering he asked for advice and confirmation what he wanted to do worked, and was mentioning other products I found it prudent to ensure he was going to do the right thing and not the wrong thing.

Not as far as I am aware, as long as the destination driver is >= than the Source driver all is fine.

you can restore to a smaller drive with acronis no problem, as long as there's enough space for the expanded image..
the first time I used acronis it was for a 25gb install from a 160gb drive to a 40gb drive
