Having no end of problems with Backup Exec on one of our servers

What other products are out there? The server is only a file server so no exchange intergration or anything like that is required

Thanks

I've only used BE, but I'm suprised you're having so many problems on what sounds like a very simple setup.

I'd personally work on trying to get the problems sorted rather than spending money on a replacement

What sort of problems are you having, perhaps someone around here can help?

If its just local file level backups you need, most people would find Windows' own backup program sufficient. BackupExec and others are only beneficial when you need to start backing up multiple servers and brick level DB backups

We need to encrypt our backups which rules out Windows backup, also email notification for jobs failing is required

I'm getting error messages about the Remote Agent:

'The resource could not be backed up because an error occurred while connecting to the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent'

I'll also get C++ runtime errors occasionaly. Its a brand new server and this is the second install attempt

Is the backup job making any progress (byte count) at all, or is it just failing immediately? Sounds stupid, but have you made sure the remote agent is installed and the service is running?

What OS is it?

Yeah service is running, byte count never moves from zero

sometimes it will sit queued for ages others it will fail straight away, although that is probably down to me changing settings

but either way it never makes it past zero

Os is 2003 Server R2

It's not SBS is it?

Any firewall/security software that might prevent connections?

It's probably worth putting the agent into debug mode to find out whats going on. Is this 12d?

Open services MMC, stop the agent service, open the properties, enter "-debug" as a startup parameter and start it again.

That should create files in the Logs folder within the Backup Exec installation. You can do it with the job engine service too. Just remember to clear that parameter and restart the service once you've figured it out because the logs can get quite big!

I've had my fair share of problems with BackupExec, but your setup sounds pretty straight forward!

It's worth turning off AOFO if its on as it can take a long time to do the snapshots and cause jobs to time out (although the error would be more specific if this was the problem). Try taking the system state out of the selection list too temporarily

Right wasn't getting any debug info from the agent service

enabled debug on the job engine service and this is what I get:
