I currently need to invest in a upgraded backup solution and wondering what are your thoughts on:

  • Acronis True Image 9.1 Enterprise Server
  • VERITAS 10d/symantec Backup Exec 10d

Both products will be backing up 640GB of server space and upto 40/50 PCs locally and remotely onto a central DAS server.

We used veritas 9 to backup Exchange mailboxs and SQL data but want to extend this into a carbon copy of OS/SQL/Mail etc.

I need it to be able to backup servers while still online/in use.

To backup remote users via ADSL/Cable connections.

What are the differences between the BE products?

Are you planning to backup dara across a load of local pc's.

Veritas is a very proven product for backig up data. I wouldn't use anything else.

Have you thought about using Veritas Netbackup? It is a hell of a lot better than Backup Exec when it comes to managing multiple backup policies across multiple sites.

It is a bit more expensive though.

For one of our clients I deployed a 5TB dedicated server in london to backup all there work. A smaller scale thing might be suitable for your remote connections.

What kind of connectivity do you have at the office?
