Backup?

If you have any data that you do not wish to lose in the event of a virus, user error or hardware failure, then yes backups are important.

Probably the easiest way on Windows 8/8.1 is to connect an external drive and use File History. This will regularly backup any files that you include in the default users folder or add to a library.

This is not a fool-proof backup method, but if you are "not great with PC's" this is the easiest starting point in my view.

If it's from a typical PC retailer, it may also prompt you to create a set of rescue / recovery DVD's if none were supplied in the box. If it doesn't automatically prompt you, there may be a program shortcut to create recovery media.
Some users don't like the bloatware that comes with the recovery DVDs or skip creating them, but they're worth doing nonetheless.
