Bad batch of Kryonaut?

Hi everyone

I recently switched my 3700x for a 5900X. Cooling is a Corsair H100i (platinum?).

I used Kryonaut when I installed the 3700x, thin even spread. When I cleaned it off, the heat spreader was quite heavily marked.

I used a different batch of Kryonaut (not bought from OCUK) on the 5900X. I warmed it in hot water first, but it spread like chewing gum (tried the included spreader and a credit card).

Have just been unlucky, or am I applying it wrong?

I have never experienced this with any other thermal interface material.

Thermal Grizzly claim (according to the response in these forums) that this is a known issue with 1 batch of their product produced in 2018. Evidence suggests that this batch is either still in circulation, or that the issue is more widespread and affects more recent batches of their paste as well. The affected tubes of Kryonaut cannot be traced so when buying you have no idea whether or not yours is affected until you use it.

Intetesting - I bought mine from the rainforest so I can't imagine it's been hanging around since 2018. I suspect it's more than an isolated incident in that case.
 
I had a similar problem with my 3900X when I used Kyronaut. Since switched back to Arctic MX-4 which I’ve used for years.
 
I had a weird issue with this paste recently as well. It was a tube I originally opened a few years ago (so could have been one of the affected batch I guess) and it was ridiculously thick. I've used it multiple times before so I know it is normally quite thick but this was like putty rather than a paste. My temps were terrible so I remounted with some MX4 and dropped something like 15 degrees.

The whole CPU was covered so I don't think just having too thick a layer applied could make that much difference? I was mounting an H115i Pro on the stock AMD brackets so I don't really see how you can get a bad mount with that either since you just clip it on and tighten until it won't go down any more. So it seems like the paste expired or went bad somehow.

Pretty much how mine was, but it was a fresh batch. I wonder if the shelf life runs from opening or manufacture? I'm amazed they have no way of tracking batches - that just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
 
i first bought it in 2018 if i remember correctly and it had scratched the hell out of my dark rock pro 4 and also my i7. when i fitted my new ryzen 3600 i first got to see the damage. i even took a hit when selling it (i7) cause of how bad it looked.

just looked it up 13th may 2018 i bought it.

This is why I won’t use Kryonaut now.

A scratched and pitted cooler has a real cost when it comes to not just performance, but also resale value. The fact that you won’t know if there is a problem unless you try it, ie be willing to gamble the value of your cpu and cooler, just makes it not worth using.

I do use other Thermal Grizzly products like liquid metal and minus8 pads, this isn’t some stand I'm making on principal. Although it has to be said, there’s a very real argument there for anyone who does decide to do that.
 
Been sticking mostly to AS5 and MX-4 - proven long term products that still give great results if applied appropriately - too many of the hyped up new pastes have long term issues like drying out or doing surface damage, etc.

i just put it down to a one off bad batch at the time as when i got my h100i pro xt i bought another which was fine with it. i even just bought a new tube a day or two ago (just waiting on ocuk delivering it) to use on my new d15s chromax.

The fact that I’ve experienced a problem and it cost me as a result made me wary. The fact that others have had the same problem with paste bought as recently as this year is what keeps me away. It’s a gamble I don’t want to take. Not when it is easy to avoid.

The information is there, what people do with that is up to them. I can only share my own experience when it is requested, as the OP of this thread, and the others like them did.
To each their own. :)
 
I hear you there. I bought a slightly larger tube many years back and it's always stayed sealed in the bag that came with it. It's still good today and I continue to use it, however, I would think twice about ordering some more when it runs out.

As far as I know, they don't distinguish between their stock and anything sent by them, so for any item also sold by a third party at the time of purchase, there's no guarantee it is genuine, or has been handled properly.
 
True, though its a lot of work to fake the whole kit. If it was a loose syringe I'd quite believe it. If course, we don't know how big the batches are or how frequently they're rolled out.
