Bad oblivion performance with 2900XT

You got a link to the Low poly count mod?

I'm also having these Oblivion problems but at 1400x1050 with 16xAA/AF and HDR turned on, around 27fps average.

:S look a bit further up the page tom posted it...

try it with no AA at all. but keep everything else on high. maybe its the HD2900xt's AA problem affecting you more or something

Its not the AA problem affecting me if it runs at:

lol yes it was I saw it there when tom posted that a couple of days ago, anyway nvm have you tried it out? Any improvement on the frames? Im getting oblivion from a friend as a late birthday pressie : D (even though I have it on my 360) so would like to know whether or not the frames have improved with the low poly grass patch :).

For me, the frames have not improved, around 37fps in grass with 8xAA Box, with Wide Tend its around 29-30 in grass at 1280x1024, still playable, but some places lag very much for me at 16xAA, 8x/4x is good enough and 4x should provide abit of a performance boost, its still around 20fps slower than the 8800GTS I had, but oh well.

Im baffled Oblivion is where the R600 actually shines it's on par and even faster than the GTS in parts. Im not sure what your doing wrong tbh but if you still don't believe me I can link you to plenty of reviews showing this and what happened to this thread

With Oblivion, performance results vary heavily depending on where you are, especially outdoors. The only way to be sure performance is less than expected would for 2 users to go wander around in the same area for a bit and post the results.

You must remember, outdoors around Layawiin or Skingrad and much more taxing than outdoors areas around Bruma or Chorrol for instance.

i just put the low poly grass mod on my game of oblivion...mooching around Weynon Priory, i got an average of around 60fps (vsync) With 16xAF and 4xAA and in game settings on max, cept shadow filtering on low and self shadows off, will try again in a while with 8xAA

Thanks for the link above!

Just tried 8xAA... dragged it down from 60avg to about 25avg.. killed it!

So now im using 4xS and its so much smoother

Going around Weynon Priory@ 1280x1024 everything max (grass and self shadows off) 4xAA 0xAF

min: 35
Avg: 55
Max: 73

Thats with purposeful use of the 3rd person view and crouching in grassy areas in order to stress the card.

At the same settings above same area with 4xAA and 16xAF

min:32
Avg:44
Max:63

Should my fps drop that much with AF on? I know im going from 0 to 16 samples but AA doesnt seem to make that much of an impact on fps compared to AF. (Before you ask AA is working as i can see the visual difference in game).

Using Fraps benchmark utility to get the results.

Edit:

Around Skingrad 4xAA 16xAF

min:16
Avg:37
Max:52

4xAA 0xAF

min:25
Avg: 41
max: 56

2xAA 8xAF

min:28
avg:40
max:73

4xAA 8xAF

min:24
avg:40
max:58

Mine drops more than that when i go from 8xAF to 16xAF...but i still get good FPS (installing QTP3, so that will soon change i expect!!)

Im not sure if ATi cards have transparency AA, but if they do (or a varient) maybe check its not on, as i THINK it will then AA the grass? could be wrong, so someone correct me if i am at all :)

try just 8xAF, maybe then it will be good:)

AA isnt the issue really, im definitely getting a greater performance hit from increasing AF which begs the question Tom how are your fps figures that good?...

Could you do a run around the stables at skingrad at the same settings as me 4xAA and 16xAF, switch between third and first person and post the results please :).

Is it me, or do the 2900's have a personality of there own, some people get crap performance with AF, I get no hit, in Lost Planet if I enable 4xAA I get a damnd 20fps hit, some other 2900's play it fine, same for other games, so random with these cards, jesus if I turned my PC on early in the morning I get **** performance in all games coz the card has just woken up, it like they live, breath and eat electricity.

I suspect my C2D @ 3.6Ghz helps shovel more instructions to the GPU and what have you. Those figures were done with 8.40 btw which are publically available.c

Just using the 8.40's tried some games, still get crap Oblivion performance and LP/Dirt, I'm gonna clock my CPU at 4.6Ghz see if thats the bottleneck :o

lol my dirt performance is pretty good in that respect, dont notice any hitches in framerates and is always above 30fps (which though smooth still doesn't excuse the fact it is poorly optimised).
