Nathan thanks for the help.

The drive was running in PIO mode 4, ive set it to 0 its now doing it in 20 minutes instead of 30.

Is there any other options i could change ?

Thanks.

It should be running in mode 4 mate. Thats the fastest. iirc

Erm, aren't you meant to run DMA instead of PIO?

lol - yup. For hard drives these days they mostly use DMA. So yeah, maybe the op should check his settings.

Think the max transfer rate for mode 5 DMA is ~100MB/s whereas PIO is about 16.5MB/s

Firstly - I don't think PIO/UDMA affects SATA devices. For example, on my NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller in Device Manager, the channels say "Serial ATA Generation 1 - 1.5G" in the transfer mode box.

I have my DVD writer on my Primary ATA channel and it says transfer mode - DMA if available, current transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 4.

I have a DVD-ROM on the Secondary ATA channel and it says transfer mode - DMA if available, current transfer mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5.

These drivers are using the nVidia nForce chipset drivers - is there a manufacturer's own chipset driver set for your motherboard?

Have you tried changing cable? Have you checked BIOS settings for harddrive?

Last of all, if it's still the same after XP re-install then I can guess it is either motherboard or harddrive.
