Bad time to upgrade ?

I’m not sure if it’s worth upgrading at the moment. I’ve been told that prices for everything have become quite ridiculous. Originally, I was aiming to move to the AM5 platform last year, but I’m not sure the performance jump is there, even if prices were normal.

My current specs are:
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X + Noctua U12S Heatsink
  • Motherboard: ASUS Crosshair VI Hero (X370)
  • RAM: 32GB (my last upgrade)
  • Storage: Samsung 1TB SSD NVME M.2 + 3TB & 4TB HDDs
The 'weak links' are:
  • GPU: Back to using my GeForce GTX Titan X
  • Monitor: 24" 1080p screen"

What should I upgrade and what to aim for ?

Where is your pc lacking in terms of performance ?

Do you plan to game at a higher resolution for example ?

To be honest I think of things like this at random times every 6 months. the only thing I would want is bigger monitor.
I did want a GPU but I dont game as much and prices are high.
I want to keep it future proof as possible when I can.

GPU: Back to using my GeForce GTX Titan X

This is the Maxwell Titan, right? Still a decent card for low-end gaming thanks to the high VRAM.

Monitor: 24" 1080p screen"

What refresh rate?

Which games do you wish to play and what is your budget?

Your CPU is still decent, so I would concentrate looking at GPU + monitor.

If you don't touch the monitor, nothing.

Upgraditus? The least expensive (relative to their pre-AI prices)/most worthwhile itch to scratch is graphics. RAM/SSD prices are what have exploded.

If AMD come out with a reasonably priced 5800X3D anniversary edition then that's worth considering.

I would suggest you grab the monitor you want a 27" 1440p oled can be had for £375 which are stunning but there's some great 1440p IPS monitors for £150.

Then follow tetras guide above. :D

i think the correct answer here then, is to leave it the f alone :)
future-proofing is a bit of a con really. you should upgrade when there is a need to (or if there is money burning a hole in your pocket and you need to scratch the upgrade itch)

Yes, its Maxwell Titan.
60hrz, not not many, I was playing Hogwarts legacy. WWE 2k25, Dragon Age, Tropico, GTA V, Sifu, Jurassic world, Elder scrolls I do tent to go back to older games.

"Upgraditus" 100% Im also thinking of a monitor, since it will be useful for both games and movies.

OLED maybe out.

Simple and to the point.

well if you want a monitor for games/movies are you looking at 1440p or 4k?
either way, you will need to upgrade that maxwell titan if you're going to get a higher res monitor and play hogwarts legacy with a higher res

for reference your titanx is about the same performance region as a 1070/3050:

Monitor im not sure yet my aim was the size and something with a better image, I was not considering the res yet, but maybe a 1440p ? as for Gpu I was thinking I would need something at the level of a 2080/6700 to be a worthy upgrade, your thoughts ?

Looking at ram prices things have jumped, I sold 16gb sammy b die for £40 4-6 months ago.

depends on what is your main goal? gaming or movies? how far can/do you sit from your screen?

if mainly movies then really i would get a big(ish) high refresh 4k tv which can still game with settings turned down (eg something like a hisense e7q pro)
if mainly gaming then a decent £150 high refresh 27 inch 1440p monitor

the best one within your budget (how long a piece of string is)

I sit in front of the pc screen, so i was thinking between 27-32".

32 inch 4k for movies
27 inch 1440p for gaming

This and I want to add something I feel some might disagree with:

Going for a 4K resolution on anything shy of a 32" screen is utterly pointless, perhaps for desktop/office or design use but for anything media related (gaming specifically) I'd defy anyone to tell the difference in blind testing for raw visuals. You just do not have the screen real estate to genuinely show off the pixels, there's a point where density vs screen size needs to be considered and imo that's 32" minimum for 4K.

You're just making things massively harder to run at native res for no benefit with a 24-27" 4K monitor.

I'd rather run a 32" 1440P monitor than a 27" 4K for pretty much any usage scenario.

you won't find me disagreeing there
i was one of the early adopters of 4k and had a 28 inch 4k screen back then...never got on with it

There's a few on here seem to swear by them, seen a couple in person and it just comes across as pointless.

Then again I know plenty who think 30fps is fine in games too, and thankfully I'm not so far into my dotage as to be blind as a bat just yet. :p

The 4K at low screen size arguments make me think of audiophile related arguments, at least with games and movies.

Edit: Better to spend your budget on a screen with competent HDR than overly worrying about res in some respects too tbh, so OLED and FALD displays.
