**Baddass' Guide to the 19" TFT Market!**

hehe, well they are the same resolution for a 17inch and 19inch monitor. it doesnt mean the pic will be worse quality though necessarily. personally i would rather have a top of the range 17inch model than a 19inch TFT. if you can strecth to the Dell 2001, then that might be a good bet as it has a 1600 res and is a nice big TFT.........if not, id stick with one of the nice 17inch models from the sticky

Does it matter that its older? Really can't decide between these two :(

personally id go for the LG1720B.......lovely looking TFT and the 16ms response time is def not a worry. the 19inch Lg looks good too, but not as nice as the 1720B imo

well theyve released the LG1730B anyway, which has the 12ms samsung panel and a diff design. the performance between the 16ms AU panel anbd the 12ms Samsung panle is going to be very similar, and i doubt ud really see any real use difference.

and nice guide ;)

official site here. well it has a 12ms panel so thats pretty good. hard to say whether it would ghost, depends on the quality of the panel and stuff like that. if you want a top performer then perhap stick with a 17inch model. however, if you want a 19inch TFT, then it is prob one of the better ones in terms of ghosting

bump!

added the VX912 to this with thanks to everyone recently for all their comments on it.......will add some more in the future too, to ensure it stays up to date as a resource for 19inch panels

And thanks for the excellent 17inch/19inch guides - really helped me in terms of learning about them and making a decision on one. :)

no problems mate :) glad you found them useful. sounds like you got yourself a nice TFT there, glad you are impressed with it

bump, to keep it alive, and because there are still a fair few 19inch questions popping up which would benefit from having a look through this thread

Also - is the general consensus that the VX912 is the best current 19" TFT for gaming with DVI and low response time (that is reasonably priced)?

Cheers,
john

imo, yes, very good price, very good spec, all the features you could want. a very good 19inch TFT :D

Edz, i will try and gather some info on that one and add it asap, problem is i dont think anyone on the forums has it yet, so will be missing the all important user comments, but i'll see what i can do :)

havent seen any main stream ones with S-IPS yet tbh. Think it will be a while before they become used in the "affordable" range :)

:) there is some info, I'll put it together for you today if i can, but the problem is, as they are so new, no one on ocuk has one, so we will be missing the all important user comments. Still, I'll try and put some info together for you and then add to it at a later date

Edz, right I've added some info on the Samsung 913N to the front page of this thread :)

I am not sure if it is wall mountable or not, Samsung's own site doesnt seem to list it and i havent seen mention of VEA wall mount compatible anywhere either :( Performance wise the 913N should be great. It remains to be seen whether early stocks will suffer from the same dead pixel problems like the Hyundai L90D+ did.....guess we'll have to wait for them to be shipped out

it might well be.......im not saying it isn't just that i cant check on Samsung's site for sure. If OcUK say it is, then i woudl def trust that! :)

ajgoodfellow, sorry to hear the VG910B didn't work out for you. From the specs, it looks like it is probably a TN film panel, and i can't find any references to it being otherwise anywhere on the web. The panel is quite old though, hence the 25ms response time.

If you want to stick with an 19" panel, then for gaming, you are really looking at the 8ms (Hyundai L90D+, Samsung 913N) and 12ms (Viewsonic VX912, LG1980U) models. Performance in games should be fine on both panels tbh, with the 8ms model offering perhaps the best pixel response performance in the 19" market at the moment. The colours on the 8ms panel have been said to be excellent by Tom's Hardware, offering performance almost as good as VA panels. This is perhaps a little hopeful, but colours are said to be good. The problem with the 8ms panel, (and this is where the 12ms is better) is with the viewing angles and movie playback. If you're looking for a solely gaming TFT, then the 8ms woudl be a good choice. If you want a little more versatility, with still a good response time, then the 12ms models might be good. If it were me, i think i would go with a 12ms LG as it just looks so nice :)

The Apple 20" WS uses a 16ms S-IPS panel from LG.Philips. Take a look at the review of it over on www.anandtech.com, it might help you decide. Many people have found it fine for gaming, but it is not as fast as the VP191B. If you are a heavy gamer, getting a screen over 19" is a risk really, as it can be quite varied as to whether you are going to be susceptable to ghosting in games. The 19" gamers TFT's are a safer bet, but there are still ppl who are not ok with them. The VP191B is much faster than the Apple though in tests, and is one of the only monitors which actually keeps a response time of below 16ms across all grey transitions. The Apple on the other hand will reach perhaps as high as 25ms on some changes.....

It depends on whether you want the extra size and resolution, or the gaming performance at the cost of the size? money is also a factor here, but if you're looking for a gamers TFT i think the 19" market is the place to look

Is it possible to update the review on the 913N?

That talks of TN Film and im pretty sure its been updated (without a name change helpfully) to use a VA panel now. Obviously i expect this will have a rather large effect on IQ etc.

afaik, the 913N still uses a TN Film panel. It is still listed on Samsung's spec here. where did you hear it had changed to a VA (presumably PVA being samsung) panel?
