Got home from work and it started. It keeps going unable to display website. Type in the ip of router and it wont connect. 3-10mins later of refreshing and it starts working again. Then it suddenly stops doing it all evening. But now it's started doing it again every few minutes. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?

oh i'm connected with a cable.

Nope virgin. oh and it seems to be computer. Just tried a download program while the browsers where dead and that started downloading at 1300kb fine.
But neither ie or firefox will connect to web addresses or to the router.

Could it be that the Virgin DNS servers, required for your browser to work and find websites, are down? Or you have somehow got the wrong DNS server settings configured??

even if I type in 192.168.1.1 to open up router config. It still says unable to connect. That doesn't require DNS does it?

anyone got an ip of an alternative DNS worth a try.

have you just got the one machine connected to the router. You are connected by cable but is it a wireless router so is it possible someone has hijacked your connection.

Just connecting to the router should not require going onto the internet though.

Have you tried resetting the router.

The only time I've ever had something similiar happen was when somebody was causing my router to overload by using torrents.

There is opendns you can try the ip for that is
208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

Yes there is wifi. one other connected to this. it's all hidden and wep protected. But when this is happening the laptop is off so only I'm connected checked on router and I'm the only ip showing as connected. I'll give those dns a try. If anyone thinks of anything.

what router is it?

try doing a hard reset on the router (usually have to unplug it and hold the reset key for 60 seconds, then plug it back in)

It's a WRT54G, so far since I've added the open dns, it's been working fine,if it starts again I'll try a reset.

Which hardware version of the WRT? Linksys firmware?
Doing any torrenting/gaming/anything that opens lots of connections?

Nope just browsing the web. It's stopped again now. When it happens it happens every few seconds for around an hour, then it's fine for ages.

What hardware version is the WRT? If it's <5, it might be worth trying DD-WRT/Tomato/some other third-party firmware.

Might have to see if I can stretch to a new router as well on pay day as well as a psu. Whats considered good these days? also any with 6 Ethernet ports?

Got to say I've had it quite a few years and it's not the first time I've had problems with it.

WRT54GL, with Tomato or whatever third-party firmware you like.
The next step up from 4 ports is 8 ports, and routers with 8 port switches built in are like hen's teeth - you could always keep your WRT54G as a 4 port switch in addition to the 4 ports on the WRT54GL (which would give you six usable ports).

It's another 2 weeks till payday. WHich should be a very good paycheck, which should mean I can buy the parts I wanted last month and a router.

It has been fine, but started playing up last night again.
Only need 4 ports now as most of the cables in the house don't work. But *** new wireless spec would be good, is it n?

Would you still recommend linksys? as I think I've had a similar problem with previous linksys routers. It's 20mb cable connection, connect to about 8 computers.

There's the WRT150N/300N, they still run some of the third party firmware. There isn't a lot of point to buying an n router unless you've got n wireless cards though, especially given 802.11n isn't a ratified standard yet...

I'm hoping to get a HTPC towards the end of the year, which will have tou use wireless to steam avi files from my main comp. Does N standard offer better rnage or just bandwidth?

Also they must have a price mistake not sure if you can send it onto who ever it is

It's more expensive than brand new.
