Ok, I got a new Maximus Extreme motherboard and when I connected the power supply to it, 24 pin and 8 pin EPS all the fans connected spun up for a split second then stopped, but all the rgb stuff carried on, I even flashed the bios to the latest one, I tried again same thing, on doing the paperclip test (shorting green and black wires pins 4 and 5 psu seems dead) but what baffles me is why does the rgb work, I know I have to get a new psu now but I just wondered if you gentlemen or ladies with more knowledge than a old pensioner might know why this happens i.e rgb works when the power supply seems buggered, thanks in advance to anyone who might know why.

Maximus extreme z490, i9 10900k, 32gb Corsair vengeance RGB pro ( only using 8gb at the moment to test), ASRock RX6700XT, Corsair HX750 PSU ( it is a old one), Asus Ryujin 360 aio,

I have checked the socket pins that was my first worry, the motherboard has 4 little led's which are supposed to come on if anything like the cpu etc. is not detected but nothing is showing, also I have 2 bios's loaded the latest and the one previous and switching between them makes no difference, I have also tried each of the 4 sticks of ram in turn, and as you suggest have removed the cmos battery for 10 minutes between each attempt to be as thorough as I can be.

Ok, same sort of results with MSI Godlike, ruined my Asus board so that has gone in the trash....lol....gonna check out a good power supply now, if that don't cure it I will throw everything in my loft and call it a day, this was going to be my last build anyway so no big deal.

Grab an 850w this will give you room for future upgrades.

Yes , looking at Corsair HX series 1000 or 850 watt as you say, don't know if I will upgrade later or not, it was just a bit of a whim to build this as I spend most of my time caring for my wife and this is going in the bedroom so I can spend more time with her hence probably my last build.

If you get another hx dont use the old cables makes sure you use the new ones just in case corsair changed the pin layout.

Let us know how you get on, use ths quote or @Name

Good luck.

I will post a update, might be a few days though as my wife has 3 to 4 days in hospital this coming week that is why I was hoping to get it up and running this weekend....such is life...I won't use my old cables anyway no point having a new psu with old cables, seems to be a spell of bad luck with power supplies for me, have to replace one in a piece of hi-fi but that is only 60 quid and about 2 hours of my time, I have checked my old power supply about 20 times this evening with the old paper clip shorting method leaving 10 minutes between each check and only about 3 times did the fan spin up and cut straight off...so only way to satisfy my curiosity is to buy a new one, next up will be a new chip if that fails, I hate to be beaten that is one of my failings....lol

Forgot to ask did you update the bios on the msi motherboard ?

Yes I updated the bios to the latest one which is supposed to give some pcie 4.0 support if you use a 11th gen chip of course, going to do a bit of reading today see if someone has had problems like this and see if anything is worth trying then I will sort a new power supply next thursday when my wife should be back home from hospital.

OK, cured it, bought a Asus Thor 850 watt PSU and with both 8 pin leads connected it fired straight up. Now back to hospital to be there when my wife comes out of the theatre, just had. to be in to accept delivery and of course had to try it before leaving...LOL....anyway it seems from everything I have read over the weekend MSI Godlike Z490 need both 8 pin leads connecting or they don't work.

Slight side topic but I don't understand why people try to get away using fewer cables. Using all the cpu and gpu cables won't make anything worse and will potentially make the system safer and more stable. Its a win/win situation.

I get it from a vanity point of view.. Less cable clutter, but priorities, people!

It was not a case of less cables in my case, but one of the big retailers who sold me the Asus Extreme saying "oh you will be fine with a corsair hx750 and intel i9 10700k, and when it did not work I contacted them to be told I must have done something wrong and refused a refund, needless to say I will not buy from them again, I will not name them suffice to say they have a 3 letter title. Anyway this has made my day sitting here with it in bios and watching the temps before I bung it into my thermaltake view 71 case. I hope anyone having the same problems come across this thread.

To be fair, a Corsair HX750 does have more than enough power for a 10700K and there's nothing to suggest it would be incompatible.

sorry my typo Tetras it should be 10900K not a 10700K, and it was not a case of the power it was that the HX750 does not have 8 pin EPS cables, sorry for any confusion, so I still say the dealer whom I have spent a lot of money with over a 35 year period was wrong.
