Hi guys, I am after a new bagless hoover. It will be used mostly on carpet but also some hard floors. Can you recommend a decent one? :)

I have a Shark NV640 and its a great hoover, amazing on carpets, light and easy to manover plus the lift away feature is fantastic, add to that a 5 year guarantee and you cant go wrong.

On Tuesday after about a year and a half of constant use ours decided to intermittently turn off and on, one call to customer services and a new hoover (all but the attachments and filters) was sent out via dpd next day delivery. The problem turned out to be the connector on a nozzle, so now we have a spare motor among other bits.

The newer model NV680 can be had for 189.99 from curries at the moment.

I still really don't get baglass vacuums. The bag is a fundamental part of a vacuum in that it the best way to separate the air and the dirt. Remove the bag and you just end up with a load of filters that need frequently changing / cleaning.

After buying the Miele cat and dog I will never go back.

Yup bagless sounds great at first, until you have to empty it all the time and get a cloud of dust in your face. Plus like you say the filters need washing all the time, which can be a PITA. With the Miele bags its quite surprising how long it takes to fill them as they seem to compress the dust and they also don't seem to lose power when the bag is full. You can get cheaper 3rd party bags on ebay, so its not expensive to run them.

Saying that though the Miele cat and dog and others of a similar design aren't without their flaws. They are well built and will last years, but that quality means they are also really heavy. Cleaning stairs and just generally moving them about isn't as easy as other vacs. You end up either dragging it around by the hose, or your foot.

I also don't like how much room they take up due to the hose when its not in use. They could have maybe used a retractable hose instead of a flexible long hose that sticks out when its clipped into the vac for storage. The extendible metal bit on mine also retracts every time there is the slightest bit of resistance, such as going from a hard floor to a rug.

I have the 2200w model which is really powerful, but on carpet or rugs it isn't very effective. I think they do an air powered active head that would probably be better, but the non active head version is only good for hard floors. The 6 speeds are great though and the lowest speed is so quiet you could vacuum at night without disturbing people if you wanted. Great for sucking spiders up that you spot on the wall at 3am when you go for a wizz :D.

Filters need cleaning an the time, really twice a year for one filter is all the time.
Get one that doesn't have any filters if it bothers you that much.
I've never had a cloud of dust in my face either. Open bin put vacuum bin in and press button. Job done.

I had a Dyson and it lost suction in no time and needed the filter cleaning to get the full suction back. If it doesnt have a filter then dust will go straight into the motor .

Well no, not with the Dyson I had. I'd press the button and the compacted dust would stay in the dust collection thing, so i'd have to remove the cylinder from the centre and tap it on the side of the bin to get it all off. All the while breathing in all the dust floating around as i'm messing about.

Maybe they have improved over time as this was 8 years ago. I was just giving my experience with them.

That's is exactly my experience of both a Dyson and a Bissel bagless. Bags for the win.

Gave up on our Dyson and went with a Henry hoover, much better. If you have stubborn carpets just buy the turbo brush attachment, cleans them up really well.
