The 2004 Grand Prix of Bahrain marked the first ever round of the FIA Formula One World Championship to be held in the Middle East and the official culmination of a multi-million dollar project started back in September 2002 when the Kingdom of Bahrain signed a long-term deal to host the event.

Located at Sakhir, 30 km south-west of the island's capital, Manama, the Hermann Tilke designed circuit contains no less than five track layouts within one complex. Construction began in November 2002 and in the months prior to its March 2004 completion, work was going on around the clock. Over 12,000 tonnes of stone were used in the build, a third of it Welsh granite, chosen for the track surface due to its excellent adhesive qualities.

The original 5.412 km Grand Prix circuit was designed with the spectator in mind, with 50,000 grandstand seats, all providing excellent views. Those spectators (a total of 100,000 over a race weekend) get to see the cars heading into the external desert area, before coming back into the oasis-styled infield. Up to 500 journalists can also witness the action from the venue's purpose-built media centre.

A revised 'endurance' track layout was used for the 2010 event, with an additional complex starting at Turn Four extending the lap to 23 corners and 6.299 km, but the event is expected to return to the original track configuration for 2012. It offers the driver a unique experience in the way the circuit's width varies at the end of the different straights. This allows for diverse racing lines, and the 15-corner design provides at least three genuine overtaking opportunities.

Note there will also be 2 days of testing following this Grand Prix on Tuesday and Wednesday at the circuit. Caterham, Mercedes & Williams will also complete their designated day of Pirelli testing here.

They will all be at the testing, well one two might skip some for money but I wouldn't think it would be this test, maybe one further in to the year when they've given up spending on this years car and are focusing on next year. Even Lotus can't afford to miss this one.

The listed cars are just which cars are doing their specific Pirelli designated day. I'm a little unclear on what "exclusively for Pirelli" means. Stick to a single setup throughout the day, or change settings according to what Pirelli want, or they only have say over which tyres and how long the stints are.

If Pirelli have too much control I would have thought most would only do their PIrelli day late in the season rather than early.

Not the best track in the world but can't complain too much as we only had to wait a week for it, I'll keep my fingers crossed for a surprise and a good race :)
 
Woohoooooo Formula 1 weekend, if the weather stays like this might even have a bbq with it being on at a decent hour :D

Quite like this track despite the criticisms people talk of, will look quite cool at night I'd imagine too!

I've only started to like this track because nobody's beaten me on it in F1 2013 yet.. then I remember how bloody boring it is when it comes to a real race :p
 
I'd forgotten this was a night race. Perfect BBQ time! Gonna turn the TV round and sit in the garden with meat and more meat and watch the race. Best stock up on beers too!
 
This is why I dont like late sunday races - BBC dont transmit the highlights until 10.30ish

Im also guessing the sky 24 hr pass will cut off 1/2 way through the race (if you started it just in time for quali.....rather than allowing the completion of the current program lol

hard to overtake leading to processional races is the biggest critique people have had in past years and just that the track layout isn't amazing or anything I guess. I like it though.

oh I think the lack of fans as well at the venue so it lacks atmosphere.
 
The track is also devoid of any real landmarks and has far too much run off; with it being a night race now it could add to the spectacle.
 
The biggest issue for me is the lack of spectators. There are hardly any grandstands and those that are there are full of VIPs and corporate guests. About 90% of the track has no spectating.
 
I like driving it on the F1 games, but it comes across so dull on TV.

Hoping for a bit of drama and some unreliability to mix it up :cool:
 
The last 2 years races haven't been too bad, but this was 90% because of the tyres, unfortunately I don't think this will be the case this year. Hoping the Williams can get in amongst the top 5 this weekend, Bahrain should suit it a bit more with it's point and squirt nature.

That's because the spectators are all friends of the king. The rest of the population are too busy being set on fire.
