Bahrain Grand Prix 2014, Sakhir - Race 3/19

They do have to ask for the FIA and other teams/manufacturers get to see the plans/proposed change, but copying seems unlikely given the differences between the engines and the cost associated with changing something if you've gone down a completely different direction.

It's been that way since the v8s came in to force and we haven't heard about engine technology being copied, even when Renault were behind (yet again).

As was said by Anthony Davidson, during the last Sky FP, part of the reason the Honda engine struggled in the later years was that they were too honest. i.e they only brought updates to improve reliability, where as the other manufacturers were improving power and efficiency too.

I also heard that Honda were a very proud company and didn't ever want to see one of their cars of engines grenading itself live on International TV so would over engineer and restrict the engine on a regular basis. They reckoned it could have easily run another 100HP over what Honda would only allow it to run at but they were afraid of losing face on TV.

Its sad that I have to force myself to watch F1 nowadays due to how it has changed over the years to what it is now. If anything should be learnt from the last 10 laps of the race it would be that the thing that makes F1 exciting is drivers being racers not managers!

No matter what level each of the teams are at, when that safety car came in it was a flat out RACE to the line! All the way down the field every driver went for it, the fuel was enough to get to the finish, the tyres were what they were (Lewis and Nico being a good example). We witnessed 10 laps of racing and it was epic....I was on the edge of my seat! When exactly did I last do that watching F1 all these years. :(

Managing tyres, managing fuel, managing your team mates position, or the constructors points, or the life of the engine etc is not racing, its just boring! We want to see man and machine slugging it out! Ego's n all.

Rant over, go back and hide now :p

I can't remember the last time we had such a thrilling side by side battle for the lead of the race. Battles as good as that to watch are relatively rare anyway, but maybe someone with a better memory can remind me when we last had one like that for 1st place.

Jeeze the incompetence at Ferrari knows no bounds. So they did 69 laps yesterday on raikkonens chassis thinking it had a slightly damaged floor. Now they find out in fact the chassis is more badly damaged than they envisaged and have suspended testing.

In season testing is so valuable and they've wasted a day because of something they surely could have picked up on before :(.

Bahrain Test, Day Two timesheet:
1 Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, 1:34.136, 120 laps.
2. Jean-Eric Vergne, Toro Rosso, 1:35.557, 64 laps.
3. Kevin Magnussen, McLaren, 1:36.203, 26 laps.
4. Sergio Perez, Force India, 1:36.586 63 laps.
5. Daniel Ricciardo, Red Bull, 1:37.310 68 laps.
6. Jules Bianchi, Marussia, 1:37.316, 93 laps.
7. Giedo Van Der Garde, Sauber, 1:37.623, 77 laps.
8. Fernando Alonso, Ferrari, 1:37.912, 12 laps.
9. Marcus Ericsson, Caterham, 1:39.263, 66 laps.
10. Felipe Nasr, Williams, 1:39.879, 64 laps.
11. Romain Grosjean, Lotus, 1:43.732, 17 laps.

Oh dear lotus. May as well call it quits now for the year.

Mercedes are truly blitzing the field

Alonso may be one of the (if not the) best driver.. But Lewis is much better at picking the right team!

So both of the Merc drivers was trying to burn more fuel under the safety car
I would say that makes them 2.5 seconds in front of the rest at this track.

Not a hope.

All the teams would have been burning extra fuel under the safety car, as it was highly unlikely we'd see a safety car, so all were aiming for roughly the same point, and indeed on the FOM graphics at around half-way, we saw all of the top 10 had used an almost identical level of fuel (as I remember Alonso had nudged 0.70% or so above the rough top 10 average).

The FOM graph thinks that everyone has got the same fuel on board(which they haven't)at the start, so it's not that good.
edit=yes it can tell you what they have used but not what they have left.

MB on sky was saying that Merc has 2.seconds clear in race mode than the other teams.I added the 0.05
"Over the last 11 laps when the car was let off the leash, the Mercedes was lapping around two seconds faster than everyone else"

Despite being the worst track for fuel efficiency, it was suggested in FP that some teams would not start with the full allocation.

It just goes to show that they are not fuel limited in terms of capacity.

For Sauber this must be terrible. Heavier engine than both Mercedes and Renault, less efficient engine, so need to carry more fuel, and to top it off one of the heaviest drivers on the grid.

The Force India's didn't pit though, did they? I don't think they were on new rubber after the safety car, whereas the Mercs obviously were.

Anyway, if qualifying doesn't show the true pace of the car in outright pace, I don't know what does.

It'll be interesting in China, where Mercedes were always mighty with the previous set of regulations.

Brundle said in the commentary that the tanks are measured before each race, so the usage is based on the actual quantity available.

How true that is...
