Baldurs Gate - Steam & New Version Thread

Regarding GOG... what will they do in 10 years time when all the Good "Old" games are already on Steam and people allready own them? Probably be just a "Mod scene" making games compatible with newer O.S's when the publishers cannot be bothered.

They will probably continue to release good, old, DRM-free games. I expect the retail channels to completely die out in 10 years time for PC gaming and Steam will not be able to offer you all games out there.

Steam won't have licenses to sell their games forever either, some games won't be renewed, some will stop working on newer OSes as you have suggested. There are plenty of things that can happen in 10 years time, for all we know, there might be some major breakdowns in Digital Distribution in that time and people unwilling to be tied to one provider any more.

It's just speculation but so is anything else, I for one am afraid that Steam will not last forever and would really want to know how it evolves in the future.

The majority of GOG business is people who purchased games many years ago on disc and lost/damaged them.

Source?

I have no intention of losing/damaging my Steam account in 10 years time :)

There's no need to, I think it's clear in the EULA that you might just lose the rights to your account. Inevitably so as we are technically "renting" the service from Valve. You don't "own" anything from their catalogue.

Also, the GOG forums are full those in tin hats who believe that running Steam consumes vital amounts of RAM and CPU cycles and the thought of running it on their system at bootup is heresy.

Truth to be told, some of them may be very oldschool or just own low-end PCs. Running Steam and a browser on my netbook can get a bit problematic at times.

I'm fairly sure the widescreen/resolution mod will work fine with a Steam version of any Infinity engine game, since you point it to the install directory anyway and off it goes.

Same for most of the mods out there now.

A new Baldur's Gate Website is online, though for mow it offers little more than a quote and some theme music. After determining this belongs to Beamdog, the digital distributor that put out MDK2 HD, the folks at GameBanshee reached out to former BioWare designer Trent Oster, co-founder of Beamdog, and got him to tell them this about whatever the site is for: "We're not related to the Steam complete edition, I can tell you that much. Other than that, we're hoping to announce something soon."

I'm sure on BG2 you could set whatever res you wanted, it just had a warning to say that they weren't officially supported. This was in the vanilla (unmodded) version of the game.

If you check the source code at www.baldursgate.com it says:

<!-- Shadowy Figure- Raise Dead : Infinity Engine -->

<!-- For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory. -->

<!-- And then... it returned. Better than it was before. -->

<!-- Pore over the tapestries and works of art hanging from our walls if you wish, Child of Bhaal... perhaps you will find a clue. But patience, ah... patience would reveal it all. -->

New game maybe?

In the infinity engine? As awesome as it is, I'd have thought it's a bit too dated now. It's not been used for a game in ten years surely? :o

Unless they're talking about a complete new engine in its name. :D

I'd love a new non 3d engine. Games used to look like blocky paintings :)

Yeah. I still don't like RPG's in 3D.

The *last* thing I want to detract from my immersion in an RPG is tedious camera controls.

And let's face it: 3rd person 3D camera controls are *always* tedious.

Am I sad for having the website open for the last hour playing that theme over and over?

Brings back so many memories... :D

Rather than a new game, it could simply be a HD Infinity Engine + rerelease for BG in HD...

A new engine would probably have a new name.

I do not think for a moment BG will be reskinned/updated as part of a steam release as much we all would like it.

X-com UFO is on steam working happily in a dos box at 640 x 480. I would guess this is going to get similar treatment and is just part of a back-catalogue publishing deal.
