Baldurs Gate - Steam & New Version Thread

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2012/02/baldurs-gate-website-lurches-to-life/

With the recent news that a Baldur’s Gate II Complete Edition is on its way to Steam, one might conclude that the new logo and music at the Baldur’s Gate website are tied into that particular project. That’s what I initially thought, but then former BioWare designer Trent Oster, now of independent developer/digital PC game store Beamdog, put the kibosh on the connection via GameBanshee.

“We’re not related to the Steam complete edition, I can tell you that much. Other than that, we’re hoping to announce something soon.”

Mother of god.

It cant be just a steam version with no differences you can just get it on gog or disc. So its got to be a HD version or a whole new game, cause whats the point with the new site and trailer.

I completed the original about 6 times when it first came out. I pretty much lost my life to it. University became about whose PC we could steal BG time on. Can't wait to find out what this is all about.

If we did get a HD version of BG 1/2 I'd gladly spend a part of my life playing it :D

BG II was one of the best games ever made.

I still play it. A refresh to make better use of current PCs would be most welcome. As long as they don't try and do something silly with it.

Did anyone here ever play the dark alliance console counterparts? I remember they too were awesome games.

Shame they weren't ported to PC :(.

Required multiple purchases to play the whole game in the form of "Chapters".

An excessive amount of cosmetic DLC items for party members.

50% of possible in-game party members removed and only available as paid-for DLC.

Paid-for DLC spells and weapons.

Facebook integration and Achivements.

More DLC.

In the infinity engine? As awesome as it is, I'd have thought it's a bit too dated now. It's not been used for a game in ten years surely? :o

Unless they're talking about a complete new engine in its name. :D

Didn't The Witcher use the Infinity Engine?

*edit* looks like it was the Aurora engine that The Witcher used (Neverwinter Nights).

Very much looking forward to whichever version ends up on steam.

I'd love to see an HD remake, the Baldur's Gate games are one of my favourite series of all time and a remake with the same gameplay but updated graphics to make it run at modern resolutions and updated artwork would be epic.

That said I'm reluctant to get excited over this yet as if it's a new game I don't think it could ever live up to the originals and would most likely be Baldur's Gate in name only, like what's happened to a lot of classic series in recent years.

Oooh, interesting tidbits. I remember there being rumour of a scrapped BG3 years ago, perhaps this is a rebirth of that project.

Must not get excited!

Watching that trailer, did you notice the light rays over the logo toward the end? I think this is a clue. I reckon an HD remake with an improved lighting engine and special effects(physics). Same 2D/3D isometric view too I reckon.

But yeah, musn't get too excited... :D
