Ballistix rant!

Most people buying D9 based memory have had the sense to go to the source and buy Ballistix, so it's expected that the majority of problems have been Crucial related. But the other brands using D9 have been reported as failing too.

This was my line of thought too. Seems like more people use crucial than other brands, so we're going to hear about more RMA's. But the percentage of failed dimm's is probably the same, if not less, than that of other memory manufacturers.

Seems to be a common problem. I've just put a 2x2GB kit of Crucial Ballistic Tracers in the post back to sunny Scotland. They also lasted a month before I started getting lots of memory errors and then hard drive corruption which finally killed my XP install.

In the event of the replacements turning out to be duff, what's a good choice to pair with a Gigabyte X38-DS4?

The G.Skill 2x2gb PK if you can find them in stock somewhere.

same for me i've got 3 sets of 5300, one is the crucial anniversaries.

all overclocked with good airflow and no dramas with any of them, all 3 must be running 14mths+ 24/7

put the mockers onto myself :o:p

today my main box in the sig wouldn't boot up, usually running 24/7 but a friend is sleeping in the room so had to be turned off for a bit.

wouldn't boot this morning and isolated the problem to a set of the ballistix....ah well at least crucial RMA is generally pretty awesome.

Also RMA'd a set of 2x1gb Ballistix 5300's, replaced with the OCZ 4 gig el cheapo set. Everything working fine now but the timings on the OCZ are a bit crap at 5-6-6-18, but tbh after all the BSODs i think i'd much rather have a 100% uptime system than worrying about the thing crashing all the goddamn time.

When I get the crucial stuff back i'll probably just give them to a friend and tell him to keep the voltage at 1.9.

Grrrr-my PC has decided that all sorts of fun failures would be a bit of a laugh again and, surprisingly, it was my Ballistix RAM yet again!!! I will be RMAing the stuff for the 4th time and am getting pretty fed up with it! I dont even overclock the stuff!!!

i had 8 DIFFERENT chips from my pair over 2 years, after those 2 years i asked crucial for a refund and brought corsair... which lasted at least 3 years before i had issues...

...been many threads on this in the past (inc mine)... Horrible ram from crucial, which is shocking :(

It looks like all 4 sticks of my Baliistix have died... Had a few reboot problems (blank screen) but cycling the power it owuld bring it back up, but now it's as dead as. Bought a cheapo stick to test and everything boots up fine. Tested each individual stick of the ballistix but cannot get it to boot at all :(

i bought the Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 and im running them at 533mhz 5-5-5-15 1.9v.

also i did a everest benchmarks. does the results look about right?

that is the right thing to do:)

at 1.9V i bet it´s running cool, and i bet the Ballistyx will last for a long time

I had mine ( PC2 5300) running for an year at 1.95V,no one single problem

rigth now they are in the drawer( but they are 100% OK),cause I bougth a nice kit of Kingston Hiper X PC2 8500, that i´m running at 450 mhz ( 1:1 with fsb) at 1.95V again:D

I've been having weird ballistix issues, bsods galore and the like. I tested them with memtest overnight and not a single error, then tried microsofts memory test utility and got an error on the random test. Then I found out that my P5k-e increases the DRAM voltage as you increase the FSB which I had done to get the ram running at 1066, and on top of this I was increasing the voltage to try and get them stable so I can only imagine they were getting a little hot! I've now turned the voltage right down and so far they are stable at 1066, 5-5-5-18 for now (memtest, orthos and MS mem util stable).

As an aside, out of frustration I picked up 2x1GB GSkills but they are only 800's, if they work with the ballistix would you recommend staying at 1066 ballistix (2x1GB), or 4 gig with the ballistix and the gskill (at a slower 800). I'm only on xp 32bit so I'm only gonna get 3.5 gig but is it really worth it?

well if u get another 2gb 1066 at least its ready if u upgrade your OS to 64bit.

what volts have u set on your ram?

ram is at 1.8v, the minimum my bios will allow. From what I read, the PLL voltage is also increased when the fsb is increased when it is set to auto (which should default at 1.5v I believe) so I've set that at 1.6v too, so maybe that is contributing to a stable system at the mo. I won't be upgrading to vista64 anytime soon for financial reasons at the mo, xp still serves me well. The only reason I may put the 2gb gskills is for gamin, but im not sure if games really use over 2gb generally at the mo.

Are the problems with Cruical RAM only effecting

- Crucial Ballistix Tracer 1066MHz (PC2-8500)

Or does it also include the

- Crucial Ballistix Tracer RED 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT25664AR804)

I ask as I was about to buy the 6400 ram and put it into an Asus extreme striker.

i used to think the same, all 3 2gb sets of ballistix were at ~2.0v .....one stick has died already and another set are acting up by the looks of it.

selling them off and going to 2gb sticks, after the problems i also had with 1gb ddr ballistix sticks (3 or 4 rma's) i think crucial have lost me until they've proven themselves again.
