i can search internet etc and find how bananas no doubt cause cancer or some crap but i want a straight answer - are they good for short term energy? whereas pasta is a slowburning energy food?

am i right or comepletely stupid?

hada banana at weekend after struggling like mad for 15miles (1hr) to have the quickest 15 mile ride ive ever had(about 40mins i think)!?

Bananas are high in "good" sugar content (sucrose, fructose and glucose) which give you a quick and sustained boost of energy if you eat them before a workout. They are also very high in potassium which is also good for exercise.

They are also great for a hangover as well....

Try eating beetroot or drinking beetroot juice daily. It has been shown to rapidly increase and maintain oxygenation levels of your blood which meaning your body doesn't need to work so hard to keep the muscles supplied....

Pasta is good or good-er (!) depending on what type you go for...

Regular pasta is essentially starch held together with a bit of protein and a tiny bit of fibre, meaning it's a good short-medium energy source. Brown pasta is comprised of slightly more of the fibre, and has starch which is bound up in more complex compounds, meaning it is a better 'longer term' source.

Bananas are pretty much just slightly complex sugars, meaning a nice jolt of short-term glucose (once sucrose/fructose has been broken down).

Both are good sources of energy for exercises, although you'd be better eating pasta the night before rather than immediately pre-workout...

Bananas causes cancer :s, you can't make a statement like that without backing it up. Don't believe everything that you read :)

He didn't say that they caused cancer.

Thanks, No i didn't but I was just using it as an extreme example of the rubbish that is posted on the internet.

for e.g. one of the links that came up when searching for bananas:

http://foodforbreastcancer.com/foods/bananas

obviously you only see the headings in google and i avoided anything to do with cancer...

That link quite clearly states there is no evidence that bananas cause breast cancer (and one study to the contrary) so I've got no idea where you got the impression that it did from.

And no, eating a banana is not like eating a mars bar. They have roughly half the calories and are much better for you.

The fact that bananas do or do not cause cancer is irrelevant; the was just pointing out that internet is generally full of loads of conflicting advice.

Put the banana down and back away.

As quoted: a Mars Bar is pretty much glucose in a wrapper... it goes straight into your system and turns your pancreas into a gibbering wreck (I suppose I should be careful when posting to the OP, but hey), splurging insulin all over the shop.

A banana - as I explained - is a mix of fructose and sucrose, both of which NEED TO BE BROKEN DOWN TO FORM GLUCOSE THAT THE BODY CAN ACTUALLY USE, which means the glucose spike is much more attenuated by comparison to a Mars Bar... i.e. it's not as quick, sudden or short a hit of glucose.

If the OP wants to skim read all his/her articles, go to the Daily Mail - they typically have a "Z0MG!!! CELERY CAUSES CANCER!!!111one" article in every paper, because they wilfully misinterpret out-of-context quotes from cherry-picked scientific journal articles, not all of which are even any good.

If the OP wants a slightly less easy read, he/she should go and have a look at something called "glycaemic index."

that is easy
just get yourself some propecia tablets but only if you can deal with the problems these tablets might give you
lol

lots of sugar? i get the body needs some but that comes through the food i eat in the day doesnt it and this is like eating a mars bar? lol

It's nothing like, because bananas contain natural sugars without any processing, unlike mars bars?

Beetroot juice is gross, try Iskiate .
