I just downloaded OPM's new (2006 anyway) album, California Poppy, and was really unimpressed with it compared to Menace to Sobriety, their old one. I looked through my music collection at some other bands, and realised the same thing happened with them as well:

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I am, That's what I'm not, loved it loads; Favourite Worst Nightmare wasn't so good for me, still like it a bit though.

Blink 182 - Enema of the State, Take off your Pants and Jacket, both awesome; Untitled sucked, became too emo.

Fall Out Boy - From Under the Cork Tree, loved it; Infinity on High (just one example) sucked IMO. They have a lot of albums...

Greenday - Dookie was easily their best album, I listened to it over and over; American Idiot had one or two really good songs, but the majority sucked.

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory was incredible, but Meteora wasn't so good, the tone of their songs just made me depressed tbh. Haven't really heard much of Project Revolution, haven't liked what I've heard at all though.

Lost Prophets - Start Something is one of my most played albums, liked it a lot, but Liberal Transmission wasn't a big hit with me.

I could go on with Muse, Nickelback, Offspring, Prodigy, System of a Down, Three Days Grace, Trapt, ATB, ATC, etc.

What is going on with them? I'm running out of bands I like!

your stuck in the past

new music is erm...new

so the older bands have to change there style to fit in with what else is around at the moment

Yeah, I feel like I should be complaining about kids these days. I'm only 16! :/

Nearly all those bands are rubbish anyway so what do you expect? ;)
That's basically true.

Arctic Monkeys: What do you expect? They are a fad. Nothing more. Everyone that listens to them right at this moment will no longer care about them in 3 years and I will be very surprised if they make it to album no 4.

Blink 182: They matured. There is only so long you can write songs about the same **** jokes and teen angst before people start to realise you're 30 and stop buying it.

FOB: Were crap from the start anyway. They could only go downhill. Especially giving the size of the ego they have achieved...

Green Day (yes, it's two words, not one): They peaked during the mid 90's punk period. Can you think of band that haven't declined since then? The Offspring, NOFX, Rancid..everyone haven't managed to match the albums they produced in that era.

Linkin Park: Yet another fad. Hybrid Theory was only good because of the time it was released. Everyone either moved on, or disappered because people stopped caring about nu-metal (and with good reason. It was inherently rubbish from the outset). They seemed to disregard this and proved that they really are nothing but a one trick pony. Peddling the only thing they know how to play, unable to evolve from a sound that is so outdated that it's become more than just cliche.

Lostprophets: They're a band who've always been bandwagon jumpers (nu-metal, post-hardcore, pop) and they will continue to be this way. They are soulless. They also seem to be happy with that...

Only the truly good bands have material that stands the test of time and manage to progress along with that. However, history is littered with bands who wrote great songs/albums but disappeared when trends changed. You only need to look at hair metal in the 80s, grunge in the early 90s and nu metal in the late 90s to realise that there are many bands who just cannot, and will not, be able to write more than 2 or 3 good songs/an album.

The same can be said for metalcore and what is falsely being called "emo" right now. The good bands will progress and be geniuely good at other things, and the bands that are actually only good at one thing, will fade out and be banished to random songs on jukeboxes in pubs across the lands and sentenced to obscurity.

Really though, OPM? I didn't think people actually liked them and I'm not being flippant here. I geniuely thought that.

Yeah, I liked some of OPM's stuff, still do for quite a few of their songs, Sound System, Fish out of Water for example. A lot of people used to like them but they've kinda disappeared...

I think this change is inherant with the maturing of a band. The maturing of a band means the music will change, and usually that means growing out of the style that made them famous, and the people liked the most. So there probably would be a degree of dislike but due to the fact it's different rather than bad (more often than not).

Have to agree with you on Greenday though, not a huge fan of their early stuff but American Idiot was like a Busted album. :p

Yeah I agree. I think some bands do that and I listen to them as I enjoy the music rather than appreciate them as a band. Razorlight is one off the top of my head.

Yeah obviously there needs to be some change, but not drastic like with some of these bands, Blink 182 were a happy band but Untitled was emo, plain and simple.

We need a band that isnt with this "scene"

Like U2 were in the 1980s...they werent with that "scene" at the time.. synthy type music...

What band is out at the moment that isnt indie or emo within the mainstream..

By within the mainstream i dont mean obscure bands that no one has heard of...bands that are popular but not with the current trend.

Off topic i guess.. oh well

you forgot the nu-rave scene ;)

/points at the Porcupine Tree thread.....
Since I like early Green Day, Muse and Offspring you might like a look at them :)

But to answer the question, all bands evolve and many of them just run out of steam and lose the ability to generate whatever it was that made them new/different/exciting/entertaining (shock, speed, stupidity just to name a few :)). Either that, or a hundred other bands jump on the bandwagon (teehee, see what I did there?) and they just don't stand out any more.

Muse??? Fantastic album, Knights of Cydonia is one of my favorite songs ever!

I think Meteora was awesome too, so many good songs, and very easy to listen to the whole album (maybe bar Numb, heard the Jay-Z remix too much).

Kings of Leon - Fantastic band.

I realised this the other week, and termed is 'second album syndrome'. Throughout my CD collection, i really truly struggle to find bands where i've gouth more than one album, where i like the later one more than the first. Even if i bought them out of chronological order! This is a wide-ish range of genres too, from ska to punk, to prog to hardcore etc..

There are a few exceptions though;

Thrice - liked The Artist in the Ambulance, absolutely loved Vheissu when it first came out. TAITA has grown on me, and i like them both equally, just depending on what mood i'm in.

Sonic Boom Six - adored the first album, wasn't too keen on A Ruff Guide to Genre-Terrorism when i first got it, but it's grown on me and now it's so much better than the first.

Blink 182 - Dude Ranch is still the best!

The Mars Volta - Went nuts when i first got De-loused, couldnt stop listening to it. Thought Amp. was dull, but it's now grown on me. Actually i probably still preferred De-loused :p

Mad Caddies - Every album is so different and great; new one coming out soon! :D

Hmn..

Don't you dig the first two Thrice albums?

What about the 2nd TMV album?

I probably would if i had them :p

I didnt know Thrice existed until TAITA (probably long after it was out). It is in my plans to get their entire discography, same with TMV!
