Bandwidth halved over Wifi

Using a Cisco WRT610N and I have 60Mb/s VM internet connection.

However when using wifi I usually only get 30Mb/s on my HTPC. Now I've read somewhere this is normal but I'm not sure about that. I can get 10MB/s when transferring files.

For reference : I wouldn't class that as 'Cisco', they just own Linksys, doesn't make it Cisco kit..

Wireless never reaches the full speed it's advertised at. I'd just drill holes and use d-line trunking to lay cat5e cables.

Okay, I don't expect to get the full speed.

30Mb/s is fine for what it's being used for so theres no real need for a higher connection on that PC, I'm just curious as to why it's losing half the bandwidth.

You should definitely be getting better then that then, what's the signal strength like?

I've never seen wireless go over 15mb/s in actual transfer speed. But I don't use it for anything besides a basic browsing connection.

I can get 23Mbs of my 30Mb Virgin connection over a wireless G connection so I'd certainly expect you to get more than 30Mb over a good N connection.

Have you tried changing channels to rule out interference from over networks? Mine was terrible till I had a look at which channels the neighbours were running on and changed to a free one.

Yep, i've gone through every channel available, higher channels are giving me the best results.

Try forcing it to wireless n only, if possible set the channel bandwidth to 40Mhz, instead of 20/40. I've also found the higher channels offer better through put for me. Obviously it depends on your kit and particular circumstances but this has enabled me sync speeds of 300Mbps, with transfer speeds of about 140Mbps on wireless n.

Yep, I've tried these settings already, max I seem to be able to get is 35-40Mb/s download.

Oh well, I might invest in a new router at some point.

What's the distance from the computer to the router? How many objects block the path (walls) and are there any large electronic devices near by (fridge, washing machine). Have you tried it with the computer right next to the router?

About three meters, there's nothing in the way.

I've moving the router closer but it really makes no difference.
