hi all, bit of a cheeky one here, basically; i just moved in with my brother and have set up virgin media BB, (after much confusion and hassel) it's all sorted.

what i'm wondering is this:

is there any way that i can split the bandwidth say 60/40 or 70/30 so i can get the majority of the bandwidth, considering i've set it all up and actually work (he's on the doll and sits round playing games all day) i'd like for it to be a little more fair on my behalf, i've been told i could set his pc to connect through my pc, but that involves having my pc on constantly, which i can't afford.

bit of a long shot and not expecting miracles, just wondered if there's a simple solution ;)

Someone posted this link in another thread - it's a custom firmware that allows you to limit bandwidth based on the MAC (physical address) of attached devices. We use the 'standard' version of Tomato on our router and it's pretty decent. You just need to make sure you buy a compatible router, download the firmware, then it takes less than 10 minutes to flash it and have it all set up.

I haven't used this particular version but it looks like it'll do exactly what you want, and compatible routers are usually pretty cheap (even better if you've got one already!)

If he is only gaming and light web browsing then it shouldn't impede on your speed too much.

If he torrents or does other heavy use it may do. I often find dealing with the person first* before going down the technical route works best.

If that fails then a router that supports QoS will be your first step.

For example in my house the rule is: If I'm awake then the lions share of the bandwidth is mine (as I pay) so no torrents or usegroup (the only thing that really impacts) - if me and the wife are asleep then my son gets all the bandwidth to do as he pleased.

well, he's usually torrenting 2/3 seasons of something at any given time, plus using my 360 for gaming :/ and while he is paying for the usage, it's not his money he's paying for it with.

while i have spoken to him, he's the type of person who just carrys on after a few days if stopping at all.

shall give these ideas a go, thanks a lot :)
