Hi all,

Recently came to turn on my PC and there was a bang and accompanying acrid plastic smell.
Stick on PSU blown I think.

It's a Thermaltake Smart Pro RGB 850W Bronze - about a year old.

So now the PC won't turn on but it's clear some power is getting to the mobo as the lights flicker and the AIO tries to turn.

I unplug everything connected and leave it for a few mins - come back, plug it all back in and it fires up like nothing ever happened?

I've seen PSUs blow before but never had one come back from the "dead" ?

Should I be worried or look to replace or has some fuse / switch saved me from something worse?

Probably some capacitor has blown, what ever it is I'd work it out and replace it (having worked fixing computers for 20 years)

Was there a TCP-ish smell? If so, one of the big electrolytic capacitors inside the PSU has failed.

Power off, disconnect from mains, remove PSU from case and inspect it visually. It should be obvious what’s failed.

...the AIO tries to turn.
If you had money for that you should have had money also for quality PSU.

And wouldn't put that PSU anywhere near my PC.
Or actually inside house at all.
Who knows if its next special effects trick is fireworks.

It has only one primary cap meaning main switcher would have likely also blown up in trying to compensate for lack of capacitance.

Thanks for the solid advice.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment with no context on my choices.

Hi look at seasinic psu or phantek or corsair but not cheap corsairs psu is the most important part of the pc mate do not skimp on it

Haven't some Corsairs have had cases of NTC resistor (or was it MOV) basically shorting and self destructing with PSU continuing to work?
yes they did. my hx1050 made a really loud bang for no reason. almost like a gunshot. even the neighbours knocked rather concerned (windows open and was 10pm). but for some reason it started to work the following day but of course I rma'd it and got a hx1000i as replacement which I'm still using 3 years later in my current build
