Bank accounts with no card reader for online?

 You can bypass the login without the card reader, but you still need it for bank transfers don't you?

Nope.

I haven't ever used my card reader, I transfer money to my girlfriends account every month.

Whether it makes a difference that she is with Nationwide as well, I do not know.

First Direct. Better than any other bank I've used by a LONG way.

Completely agree. Always wins the best Customer Service award on MoneySavingExpert.com, and I can see why.

In fact you kind of wonder how they managed to make the whole banking thing seem so easy, and everyone balls it up so much.

Especially when you think that they must share some infrastructure with HSBC.

Who are not very good.

Is anybody with a bank whose digital banking does NOT require them to use a card reader authentication scheme?? This has cropped up a few times for me now where I need to set up a payment and don't have the card reader to hand. Usually a phone call to phone banking allows me to use it, but today they said I can make a single payment but the card reader should be used to authorise a payee to stay in my payee list. I don't want to carry a card reader around with me all the time, it totally goes against the idea of digital banking for me (quick simple and accessible, unlike visiting a branch).

So, are any digital banking accounts free from hardware based authentication and rely on user/passwords only?

nearly all banks? you only get the reader if you want it afaik.

Nope, both BoS and RBS (and Nationwide when I was with them) sent me a card reader unprompted. Now RBS tell me it is mandatory to use one. I understand why they want to use security hardware, but it totally knackers the convenience for me.

The RBS app for Android is quite good but lacking in functionality at the moment. Maybe they will build in the ability to set up new accounts at some point. I think I'm going to have a look at Santander though.

Thanks for all the replies.

HSBC calculator thingy is mandatory, although mine is on my keyring and always with me.

The reason why banks are doing this is because morons fall for phishing emails and there would be a public, media and political outcry if banks were to make people responsible for the losses. So the banks put these devices out to cut down on fraud.

ahhh sounds like it will be everywhere eventually then...:p

Barclays have just changed there log in methods and you can now get in and do most stuff without the pinsentry thingy.

Santander are balls, avoid using that failure of a banking institution.

I don't thing Lloyds have one and First Direct are supposed to be excellent.

I have accounts with Halifax, Lloyds TSB and First Direct and none of them have card reader machines for use with online banking. They all have mobile banking apps on the Android and Apple app stores as well. In addition to this, they all have 24 hour UK call centres and geographic phone numbers that you can use to phone the aforementioned call centres. \o/

Just switched to first direct........seems a good decision reading some of those replies :D

But damn they NEED to make an android app
