Bank accounts

Surely all the banks that have Online Banking will have (or will be about to) introduced a card reader of sorts.

I'm with Nationwide and not had to ring them once.
0 problems.
Can transfer money around willynilly.
Instant payments to and from people.
I even get to see my Mortgage "account" online that they kindly added to my Online Banking (as depressing as the figure is)
:)

The letter seems to imply all services, also it gives a date for the changes of toc (and hence presumably website/app) of 4th October:

We are introducing Digital Secure Key (DSK, too lazy to type) which you can setup within the Banking on the go App. You can use the DSK to log onto internet banking at firstdirect.com and also to log onto the App.

You will need to use a DSK or a physical Secure Key to be able to access all Internet Banking services at first direct.com. The banking services currently available through our Banking on the go App will remain the same, but with DSK logging on to the app will be quicker and easier.

However, DSK will not be available if you are using the app on an iPad

I've got accounts with both Halifax and Santander.

Halifax have the bonus of also having the clarity credit card for free foreign withdrawls. They've also just introduced cashback to compete with the Santander 123 account.

Santander are also good from the last 18 months of service, although their system doesnt seem to want to offer me an overdraft even though the person i spoke to couldn't see any reason for that as i met all the criteria.

For internet transfers both only require you to re-enter your password for any existing transfers. For a new one they send you a code to your mobile which you then enter online as a bit of extra security. No sign of an additional reader though.

Natwest is one that does have a good wp8 app

Halifax are terriable and cant get anything right, they couldnt even read the application and then it went down hill from there.

That's rather unfortunate. I have been with Halifax for 20 years. Using Online services for at least 10 - 12 years too and never had much of an issue unless it was a major outage or something.

Why cant metro bank extend there branches, so far they're winning on my splreadsheet. No fees or loading on foreign wthdraws and purchases, and cheapest so far for swift transfer, but by phone only, not online. Nationwide do online swift. But everythings so expensive.
Natwest has best extras and wp8 app, cardless cash withdrawls etc.

And they all hate us motorcyclists, so many paid acocunts come with breakdown cover but exclude motorbikes.

Edit actually nationwide flexplus is free cash withdrawls abroad and 2% on purchases.

Lloyds swift online and chepeast so far at £10, cash/purchases aboard horrible. Fee does ikn cluded motorbike cover (everything not just roadside), phone insurance and worldwide travel in surance in cluding scuba, hiking only up to 2500m though. Does anyone have a llyods accoun t and can see how much the add on. Is for above 2500m is? (Need 6000m) Also whats the security on llyods? Says if your an existing customer you can just log on. And add stuff to the travel insurance.

Don't discount First Direct yet - they are awesome - telephone banking, you are through to a real person (who speaks English) within 3 rings, internet banking working perfectly, immediate transfers, card replacement next day, competitive loan rates, decent offers and you can go into your local HSBC for over the counter matters without a quip - they are the most popular bank of them all for a reason.

Security is a username, password and 3 digits from a memorable word, I use the android app and it's works. I also like the money manager feature, tracking savings targets and breakdown of spending into categories.
What I really like is the leeway for going overdrawn, I get a text message and transfer some funds across by 3:30pm and they do not charge you which is probably why I've stayed with them. Not that it happens often, but it's nice to know there is some leniency.

I don't have insurance with them however so I can't comment on that.

HSBC, best service quality in the business, presentable, well dressed, courteous on the phones, helpful as anything.

Natwest were always orange, sloppily dressed, not very helpful and constantly trying to sell me ****. If I want ****, I'll ask you, **** your commission, if you wanted to make some money you should have gotten a real job.

RBS has a card reader to setup new payees and to make the first transfer only. Once you have made a transfer, the reader is not required. You can also pay anyone with the app if they either have the app themselves OR have a valid VISA card to pay onto.

The login is just a 4-8 digit code. The security is setup the first time which ties the app to your IMEI number on the device. AFAIK you can have it setup on more than 1 device as well.

Given that the last 3 companies I have worked for use First Direct and John Lewis as benchmarks, First Direct gets my vote (though I can't move to them until May next year :()

Glaucus, on a completely OT question, did you ever finish your old Dodge Charger rebuild?

EDIT: I think it was a Charger you bought anyway

EDIT2: And i think it was you!

Yes it was and no i didnt, just sat there in pieces.
The rust was worse than ot looked, it needs to be totally stripped down, i dont have the space to do it, need a double garage at least, so at the moment its jst sat there and nothings happened in yeeaaaarrrrsss. The bulk head between cabin and the bit above engine bay andwindscreen, is pretty much non existent for example.

I have accounts with
Barclays
First Direct
Natwest

Barclays used to be really annoying because you needed the card reader and card to login, I can now use the smartphone app to login. both the online login and the app do there jobs just fine.

Natwest, can login to online account and transfer money and stuff without card reader, but do need card reader for certain functions, the app looks very nice and is quite slick. not played with this as much however as I rarely need to check these accounts because they are the joint accounts and just pay bills really

First direct - just signed up with these guys, the smartphone app works, need 3 letters from password and also another question to answer (such as town you live in etc) not so keen on the online site, although functional does not look as nice as barclays, although it does everything that the barclays and natwest sites do. The smartphone app I have literally signed into once so can't really comment on it.

I am perfectly happy with Barclays service and I like the fact that I can walk into an actual bank. But I signed up to First Direct for my £125 :D

As a side note, how does one pay physical money into a First direct bank ?????
