Whether this stunt is art isn't my point, it was is Banksy an artist? Based on his previous works, is he an artist?
It's more subversion than art in the literal sense, but it's still art for me.

Same could be said of PH's album. It's a subversion of decent music.

Your average Paris Hilton fan probably would've been too stupid to notice the changes to the CD anyway.

Wish I could get a banksy version of the cd. Retailing for £200 on ebay at the moment, which is slightly overpriced imo :p

I think you have neatly side stepped my post by erm, bizarrely, bringing up my Sig of all things but so be it. :)

F4J..........

I have their logo in my sig because I did and do support their cause.

They "are no more" now, anyway, as far as I know. I keep my sig simply because their aims were in true with my own.

As for "being artists because of their stupid stunts" I think you perhaps need to start a new thread for me to get into that discussion?
I wasn't addressing you I was addressing Tru. Banksy did something stupid and its called art. F4J did something stupid and it isn't. Both generated discussion yet one is thought of as art (though not by me I hasten to add) and one isn't.

Hang on a minute. Banksy (and team) subverted a music CD and associated media, which although relies primarily on the source material, still involves some creativity and artistic talent - both in remixing the music and editing the artwork.

F4J dressed up in costumes and climbed onto various buildings. There is no similarity!

Well, I like what this guy does.

I think this latest thing is funny.

I really can't understand why everyone gets so uptight in here and can't see the funny side of his prank.

:p

I'm sure you can see why I thought your comment was addressing me due to my sig and the lack of F4J logo in Tru's sig. ;)

Apologies.

As for your comment above, I must still disagree.

Banksy's actions are either art or stupidity depending on where you stand. If we were to go with a majority (on this forum at least) then many would consider him to be an artist under their criteria.

I think that under any criteria a man with such talents at his disposal (look at the pics of his work) is most definitely not a "nobber".

If his actions "offend" your sensibilities then that is fair enough, but he hardly deserves such a title as you gave him.......... in my humble opinion.

Again, F4J. Their actions may have been considered to be "stupid" by those not affected by the issues in parental law they were endeavouring to highlight.

Many, including myself, thought their actions and goals were anything but stupid.

...and yet even before your post someone was saying how they agreed with my view of what F4J were doing (their means to achieving their ends, not their goals) yet not agreeing with my view of Banksy.

They both carried out daft, silly stunts. Regardless of their aims. Why is one art and the other isn't?

Don't be a nobber, art's an incredibly subjective term; next you’ll be arguing Pluto’s not a planet.

i believe it was answered above. One required forethought, skill and talent, the other required a costume and climbing.

Ironically, the "art" of the remixed paris hilton CD has also gone on to raise a LOAD of money - another difference between him and PH - tho it should be said he doesnt get the money.

Both are pranks, both to get a point across, but not both "art".

Dont take Art as being someone who can paint a great landscape or do a portrait, as it simply is far too broad a concept.

Graffitti is art. Its also vandalism, but its still art...

I wasn't giving my opinion I was saying what others have said. Answer the question, why is Banksy's stupid stunt regarded as art and why is the F4J not?

I really can't put this in plainer English for you, and I actually thought you had a couple of cells upstairs to rub together :/

You can keep your attacks to yourself BTW.

PH's album required forethought, skill and talent. Moreso than the 'remix' released IMO. So who is the nobber to judge?

Indeed it did, but i'd wager she didnt write the music, lyrics or compose it herself. Rather a music exec had a song she purchased and sung. The studio techs would have mixed it all together, made it sound good ;) and a publisher published it - basically because her image is marketable.

So whilst there was talent involved, most of it was NOT PHs. Besides, i never said pop music wasnt a form of art :p i said F4Js antics were not art, so dont realy get the point.

None of which had anything whatsoever to do with Miss Hilton. All the lyrics would have been written for her, all the music would have been produced and engineered for her, and all she would have needed to do was record the vocals and then let the real musicians do their work.

So apart from possibly picking the tracks, all she's done is spend some time in the booth and had some pictures taken. Everything else would have been done on approval. All she'd really need the ability to sing vaguely in tune (not hold a note) and Autotune and the engineers would have done the rest.

And that's Pop Music, folks.

Who says the F4J stunt is not art? I say it's a simply political protest but I bet some poncy art student wrote a paper about why it is art.

Banksy's CD stunt took creativity, some talent and a bit of smart thinking. If you don't think it's art, that's fine, you don't have to. It is though. ;)

Who says Banksy produced the CD rather than getting someone else to, in exactly the same way you all believe PH did?

I am fine with someone thinking F4J actions are art if they so wish. Its just not how I think of them.

I don't profess to be anywhere clever enough to judge the perceived boundaries.

They appear in my sig for what they stand for though, not their artistic merit (or lack of.)

Now that is clarified........

Just looking at the above quotes don't you find it just a tiny bit....ill-advised, after you first coined the term "nobber" in this thread with your very first post to protest about attacks?

I think that if you had written, if in only one sentence in your first post, a little background info as to why you held him in such low regard this thread would have died long ago.

I mean. I know this isn't Speakers Corner but if someone is as dismissive to your view as this,

Gilly said:
Why?

Nobber if you ask me.

would you not take exception to it also?

every source we have avaliable.

Whereas look on the back of PHs album and it will tell you who wrote the lyrics and music.

I dont own it, so cant check :p (and wouldnt admit to it if i did, tho that one single is quite UB40ish which is a saving grace)

the CDs feature Banksy's own rudimentary compositions.

The record credits have been re-edited to include thanks to the artist for his "wonderful work".

EDIT: and for the record i dont see F4J as art either - its a political statement, kinda like protesting. I'm not even sure the CD thingy is art, but he is an Artist as opposed to a "nobber"

Thats fair enough. I still wasn't addressing you though. I don't believe their stunts were anything to do with art and in the same way I don't believe Banksy's stunt was.

Not really. Not unless Banksy is a member here.

Yes, I was just making a general comment regarding F4J, not assuming you were addressing me on this one. :)

Just wanted to illustrate that there maybe someone out there who does think F4J is art. Who am I to argue?

To me the fundamental difference between F4J and Banksy is that before this "stunt" he was already regarded by the majority that had heard of him to be an artist.

F4J had never rose from such a background before performing the "stunts" they pulled off.

Thats just how I see it.

I agree you didn't personally insult Banksy, just wanted to point out that once someone uses the term "nobber" to describe anyone it's pretty much all downhill for any reasoned arguments after that.
