Bar Work

I did it for three years while I was at uni/looking for a real job.

It can be a lot of fun if you get on with the people you work with, but with the abuse from customers, long hours, difficulties getting home after a shift and the crap pay you can also do better elsewhere!

I met my girlfriend at my last bar though (worked with her) so I guess that place wasn't that bad.

(Hope that keeps her happy)

Arent nthose the reasons you went for the job?

I love the abuse form customers! it adds the spice to the job, mainly cause i give as good as i get. Love it!

Endless supply of sexeh women too! OMG you can like end up kissing at least 5 in one night! though that is a good night!

Loud music isnt a disadvantage

Towards the end of the night at like 3 is when it really hits you the tiredness and how hard you have worked!

I walk home, takes bout half hour but i dont mind, it nice after work.

Its not all fun and games.

Working in a bar/restaurant is a nightmare because all customers are tools. fact

That's only a problem if you take the abuse, most people just tell them where to go, just before I left working in bars (worked my notice as I liked the place) I was told I may have to attend a hearing after someone got abusive and I told him to "**** off you stupid fat ****" and offered to remove him from the building.

Bar work is all about the fun that's why everyone does it, no need to get stressed about it.

Your weird.

You can't really give as you get all the time or you will be out the door in some cases

We have a right orrible bunch of ***** in on a friday and its the only way to handle em, obviosuly not phsically! lol

though giving em sharp push in between there collar bone to get em of the bar usually ends up with them getting chucked out!

I think it depends where you work. The one I worked in was horrible. Was a fairly "workie" pub, I had people talking about grabbing my boobs, one actually went for it and my boss didn't even say anything to him  We also had to compete for overtime (we each had a number on the till and who served the most got asked to do overtime). Unsocialable hours and we weren't allowed breaks or anything.

It obviously varies from pub to pub and guys are less likely get abuse but I've seen that happen too!

REALLY? OMG if that happened to any of the lasses here there'd be hell to pay! And you would never see them at the club again, There was once a guy who a work collegue had had trouble (she was assaulted by them) with outside of the club, soon as one of the bosses found out they were out within 5 minutes of entering the place

Funniest I have seen was a girl was getting abuse of someone, she stopped the rest of a bar on a Saturday night and told everyone not to serve this guy or his friends, he complained to the manager and he turned around and told the guy "What do you want me to do? It's them who won't serve you"

Oh yeh, what someone said about Tinitus is true, I have it at 22 years old and it isn't nice so think about that before working somewhere that will have loud music!

They supply you with protective ear thingys you stick in ya ears

Maybe yours did but I've worked at Sports Cafe, Lloyds bar, Spirit group pubs and a private club in Worcester and not once were we offered any ear protection we were just told to put up with it.

Its awesome, but you get paid crap :)

KaHn

I used to work in bar/hotel type place. On sat nights when functions were on I used to get paid more in tips than my normal rate :)

Personally enjoyed it loads and had a lot of laughs.

And to however mentioned above about getting abused by drunks, well they're just crap at theor job. The whole idea is to either not serve some one is drunk or kick them out if they start to act stupid. No need to take any abuse, just kick em out, simple.

I personally didn't like it. But maybe it's because I jumped in at the deep end and was working in a cocktail bar.

Also it was really annoying that when anything decent was going on with my friends I'd be working and miss out. That was frustrating.

I didn't like it in general but I think i'd have a different view on it if I was at a different style of bar.

Cocktail bars are the best! Im on one and there amazing, all the stuff you learn to do and that and all th drinks and cocktails.

I love going into other clubs or places around campus and asking for like stuff that like the workers at the bars on campus have never heard of and having to like point it out to them then watch them take an age to find it on the tills!

Are you thinking of doing this with another job or just as something for fun?

As you will find you will drink during the week on days off, go to parties etc.

KaHn
I have a full time job, I was just thinking about Friday/Saturday nights.

I think you either love it or hate it, ive worked in loads of pubs now and try to move around to get a change of scenery, currently working at one pub thursday and sunday and just got a new job at another friday and saturday despite something like 40 people applying for the job and them only setting on 2.

Good points
getting paid cash (depending where you work)
girls
you nearly always end up copping off with at least one of the female bar staff
free beer
tips
finding money
saves you loads of money (i go out on the student nights out at uni)

bad points
unsociable hours can impact on my uni work sometimes, but im more of a nite person anyway
the management at pubs are usally complete clowns
drunks
fights

I absolutely love my part time bar job when I'm back home. Get paid cash in hand (which is always rounded up), unlimited free drinks, socialising with all the regulars, generally have a great laugh.
I used to work in big chain pub/restaurant and it was dreadful though. Any wastage and it would either be out of your wages or you'd have to pay for it.

Why did you not get your own?

The pay is indeed crap, however i did a pretty good time (worked in Varsity in Bradford) and the good thing was because we worked there, we got in free in all the other bars/clubs on bar street (revolution, walkabout and livingstones :))

Bar work is crap on week nights but friday/saturday nights are good. Get drinks bought for you all night nd its highly amusing watchin couples argue :D x
