Uh oh,

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=41256

I have been pointing out that opteron speeds, and opteron demo'd speeds were massively below what was released last time around. 1.4Ghz opto's demoed before the ath 64/opterons came out the first time.

i don't think they'll launch at 3Ghz, its remotely possible, but i doubt it.

opterons will have 2.6Ghz parts it would seem for the single cpu(quad core)'s almost from launch. only the 2 and 8 cpu opterons seem to be coming out at lower speeds till new stepping it would seem? which sounds like HT links aren't easy to get running, or they've built up a small supply of those and want to sell them before selling the new steppings.

i reckon a 2.4-2.6Ghz will be the top end desktop version to launch, possibly higher. still most info suggests it couple at that speed, do over a 3Ghz + kentsfield and with penryn barely faster clock for clock.

Yeah, wouldn't be surprised if that Vista shot was really just a ES A64 X2. If this was really demo'd I would expect other sites to be reporting it.

Jokester

Well the vista score thing seems to be about right as most c2q at 3.4 get around that score so maybe???

They've just put up a more in depth article about the demo and the future of amd's cpus on anandtech.

The first Barcelona processors available will be the HE (Energy Efficient) and standard performance CPUs, running at speeds of 2.0GHz or lower at launch:

In Q4 of this year AMD will introduce the SE (High Performance) Barcelona parts, running at 2.3GHz and above.

In a demonstration designed to prove that Phenom isn't broken, AMD featured a quad-core Phenom X4 processor, with standard cooling, running at 3.0GHz. While Phenom won't be anywhere near that clock speed when it launches at the end of this year, AMD expects to be at 3GHz within the first half of 2008.
Sounds good, hopefully the performance will be good enough to beat the C2D and C2Q to make for some good competition and low prices. :D

Good, hopefully they'll beat C2D by a good margin, and then Penryns will whoop these, would result in the most lovely prices ever :)

And well, i really think it's too little too late for the group of users which OcUK mostly represents, however for the more broad and less performance-oriented buying force it's great, AMD usually have lower prices :)

those are all the opteron versions. as i said theres been talk of a very good stepping made a while ago which gave them a 500Mhz bump, then everyone saw a 1.8Ghz demo'd opteron at CES i think and the press world jumped all over it claiming crap speeds, won't compete la de da.

thing is with amd, they convert fabs over part at a time to new process's. obviously the first bits went into 65nm x2 production, so a very small amount of slow going barca's have been being made. i reckon they've just got a small (relatively but no one buys big for the first couple months of new chips) amount of stock built up they've said the older stepping for the 2 and 8 way servers as well those kinds of servers like low speed but parralel often, and they don't sell that many 8 core ones. then bring out the faster speeds for desktop and 1 cpu servers for now.

it wouldn't have been a 3Ghz x2 i don't think as i don't think a 3Ghz c2d gives you a 5.9 score anyway. hell, can't even remember what i'm at now, 5.8 score and a 3.6Ghz c2d e6600 so full cache also. its deffo quad core at 3Ghz.

Its very rare for amd/intel to ever show an overclocked part in a demo, so sounds like they might be able to go 3Ghz stock, but i would assume its a part to come at a "later date" meaning yeilds of 3Ghz stock parts, at decent TDP are poop.

Seriously all the proof you need is this, penryn is seemingly ready now. intel, delay a chip that long, after LOTS of industry talk saying they might move up the launch a load to peeve off AMD, and because they are ready with 45nm. for intel to NOT do that with something thats working, and for them to not this close have some details of speeds, either somethings wrong with process or they think AMD is going to be extremely competitive and they'll have to compete on price, and move the price points up on speed, IE the £160 2.4Ghz will have to be 3Ghz to compete or something.

but the other horrible possibility is this, quad core, lowish yeilds, way expensive and not really able to get anywhere near a £160 quad core. with few labs and only one coverted to 65nm at the moment, though they are saying they are doing much better out of the 65nm fab than they expected. i dunno, i think amd will win the performance crown like core 2 duo has. but if you have to pay £300 for a quad core and a Q6600 at £160 will be the same in games.

Lol I became suspicious as soon as I saw theinquirer.net in the link. But it sounds promising.

Amazing how often people automatically slate the INQ, and yet it provides the vast majority of early correct rumours on the web... yes they get things wrong, but so does any rumour-mill. Love it for what it is.

Anyway 3ghz Phenom is looking grwat... can't wait for these to arrive and be compared and benched to Peryn. :)

This will also be good as for the first time in a long time both AMD and INTEL will launch their new cores around the same time. Bring on a price war. :D

Except Penryn isnt much more than a shrunk and slightly tweaked "Core", utilising the 1333Mhz FSB that the E/Qxx50's are using.

Early benchmarks didnt seem to be that impressive except in applications that were *designed* to be good on Penryn.

But if Barca cant beat Core by a significant margin, then Penryn should be enough to win the crown back.

Low prices would be good though!

A fellow mod on my home forum EOCF works for Intel and works closely with these chips... he is saying (and I have no reason to doubt him, he's not the type to needlessly hype or BS) that the new core CPU's from Intel are absolute screamers. Barcelona will have stiff competition, no doubt.

Hopefully this means an AMD comeback. Saying that, the A64 chips are no slouch even now in core 2s shadow, a lot of it is hype tbh.
