Hi guys,

I am looking to build a barebones system to use as an ESX server just for running vms, i wondered if anyone have done this already and had any advice?

Thanks

One of the key things to check is that the hardware you intend to use is supported by ESX (e.g. SATA or RAID controllers, NICs etc).

For instance my Gigabyte MicroATX motherboard has an onboard Realtek Gigabyte NIC but this is not supported by ESX so cannot be used, and so I had to fit an Intel NIC instead.

EDIT: Link for ESX HCL http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php

Ok thanks,

The storage controller and onboard NIC are supported, would Freenas work as a VM on ESX 4.0 i was hoping to have one extra box i could use as a vsphere box and NAS at the same time. Main use for the NAS would be film store which then get streamed to my Media box.

I have not used FreeNAS on ESX (but a quick google looks like other people have) but I did try Openfiler (www.openfiler.com) on ESX and there is a Virtual Appliance available for download.

Openfiler had a nice interface, but in the end, I only really needed CIFS file shares, so Openfiler was a bit overkill for me, so stuck with a Linux VM with Samba and Windows Server VM for my file share needs.
