It is that time of the year where I need to upgrade the engine of my machine (and everything else that goes with it). The only thing I want to know is if the money I pour into it is justified from the performance boost I will see.

Currently the main games I play on my rig are WoW, HL2, DoD and CS source and a few RTS games like Dawn of War 40k, rome total war.

I know that i will see a performance increase but considering that I am going for a dual core CPU is it worth it or should I just get a single core CPU with a higher clock speed ?

Can i expect to see a markedly high increase in Frame rates for all of the games I have listed above by using a dual core CPU ?

Well considering youre going to need a new motherboard and CPU id look into getting a core 2 duo system. Yes, you'd need new RAM, but you could cover that by flogging your socket a stuff as well.

Agreed. Think very hard about your next pc upgrade, cos if u been out of the loop, thing have CHANGED.

I was thnking of getting the Asus A8N-SLi Se and then slaping 1gig or maybe 2 (depending on money) Geil 3200ddr ram in it

Have u got your heart set on getting AMD again or are u open to suggestions?

I am always open to suggestions :P depending on how deep my pockets are of course :)

The key thing for me now is to get a system that will be good for at least another 18 months - 2 years before I need to upgrade again.

Problem is tho, that mobo is gonna be about £60 new and for that you can get hold of the conroe Xfire mobo that asrock do.

And the E6300, and possibly the E6400 is cheaper that the X2 4600+ as well.

If you really did want to reuse your RAM then asrock do a board that takes DDR RAM with conroe cpus, theres a thread in motherboards about it

I agree that asrock conroe boards are nice, cheap, stable, the Xfire one is pretty well equipped too. A bit overclocking limited though. expect a max of between 300-350 on the FSB side.
