I wasn't sure if I was going to be riding this winter but it looks like I'll be giving up the car to keep the bike so I need to keep warm.

Are there any good deals on base layers or any recommendations and what socks are you chaps wearing?

Aldi had 100% merino for £16, they might still have them, not sure. Got my bottoms from there, then my top for Amazon. Both really good, wearing those I don't really even need my jacket's thermals.

No idea what socks I wear. They're socks :p

You can get merino socks as well though which I'd imagine would be good.

If you want some really warm socks then Heat holders are the way forward, used to wear them when I worked on the doors 6 hours in -10 and my feet were still toasty.

Merino wool is the best material.

Hmm I've heard differently. I was reading you want synthetics if you're doing anything physical and as I might be at work I don't want to have to remove my undies if I get sweaty. :p

My feet always get really cold on the bike even behind the protection offered by the scooter so the cheap thermal socks I bought from the supermarket aren't gong to cut it. I'll give heat holders a try.

Works fine for me when hiking and riding in the sub zero alps.

Well can't really say fairer than that, I'll give merino wool a go then.

thick jumper? don't need anything else

weise nrg trousers keep me warm

Don't really want the additional bulk and I'd rather not have to take off more clothing when I get to work, plus as I occasionally work outside base layers would be useful.

T shirt, shirt, two thermal liners and the jacket, suit trousers, thermal liner bike trousers, and primark 'work' socks has me building up a sweat in the winters. Just need to get a neck tube/face layer. And for gloves, blue vinyl gloves underneath my textile gloves, no wet no wind :D

As mentioned, merino wool base layers are awesome. They'll keep you warm when it's cold, and wick sweat away when it's hot. Aldi probably don't have on theirs left but if you're looking for some other decent value ones mountain warehouse (outdoor shop) do them for around £25 each for top and bottoms.

They're made for 'active' sports like cycling, they hold onto sweat (but don't feel wet) and are naturally anti-bacterial so even after 2-3 days use they don't smell. And they're very thin and light for how much warmth they provide.

Merino base layers, all the way.

I could suggest pedalling faster but I wont :)

Agree with others merino wool is good and can be bought at Marks and Spencer's among other places listed above
