Basic 2.1 Setup - advice required

Bought a 37LB550 Samsung TV and agree with most reviews that the sound is average so was thinking of getting an accompanying budget sound setup.

I was wondering if i can buy a 2.1 set of PC speakers such as logitech/sony and connect them via the optical out from the TV and whether this will be any noticably better than the inbuilt speakers?

I dont want to spend more than £80 ideally and have found PC speakers cheaper than other AV options.

I'm not sure there any speakers that offer optical in that price range. They would need their own DAC, which bumps the cost up. Edirol make some monitors with optical, but they are £120 approx. You could get a set of 2.1 and connect them to the headphone socket, other than that, I think you might be out of luck if you want to connect via optical only at that price point.

If you look around you can get a cheap 5.1 system 2nd hand for that, which would be more likely to have optical inputs on it.

Optical wasn't imperitive as I'm no audiophile so Phono would also do for me

I''d go for 2.0 > 2.1 personally, 2.1 systems have poor dynamics unless the sub is perfectly placed...

In terms of absolute sound quality your probably right, a cheap second hand amp and a pair of bookshelf speakers will almost certainly sound better. However they won't look as nice or be as convenient and discreet, which is definately an issue in a living room especially if a woman is involved! I think you'll also struggle to do anything particularly impressive for the price of the Aego's.
