Basic add-on microphone?

Since this is camera equipment we can sell on MM no problems, if I were to put my shotgun mic up on MM would you be interested? I was intending to eBay it. I've found the Stereo Videomic Pro with windcutter and case for a good price so will order that.

If you guys can't work something out I would be interested... but I don't wish to step on anyone’s toes :)

I too saw the red Rycote version, which seems like a improvement on the older model... so, I had already set upon getting one of these.

If a deal can be done I would be happy to take it.

Awh! What a shame, I was so close to getting in. ;) Will have to pick myself a new one up, hope the Stereo VideoMic works well for you. :)

It should do! Got it for £165 with dead kitten and case which was quite a good price :)

Ordered the VideoMic this morning(the one with the red mount), will be interesting to see what it is like when it gets here. :D

Very pleased with the stereo-ness of the videomic, it arrived this morning and I've been testing it out. The seller said it was only used a couple of times. Everything works. Quick sample:

Enjoy your Shotgun mic too by the way!

That sounds pretty darn good! Particularly like the scissor test in the 3D video, was like somebody was trying to cut my ears off! :D

I'm sure I will, just got to get the video plans and ideas sorted... should be a lot of fun in the long run. :)

:D It's gonna be fun taking advantage of this stereo 3d effect that's for sure.

Indeed, it sounds very good, which got me thinking again.

And I just managed to grab one of these on Ebay for £62 which seems like a bargain... its the older, less compact, version, but most seem to be priced around £130, so I'm hoping I've got a good deal here.

The films I attempt to make are landscape based, underscored by my own music, but I also wanted to add some of the natural sounds and ambiance, so having that in stereo will be a very nice addition.

Need to get a dead cat, and find a boom pole with shoe attachment, to get in close to certain sounds.

That's a great price!

I'm going to attempt at building a motorised buggy as a dolly rig to mount the camera on with a standard tripod thread and ball head screwed onto that. The weight of the camera + lens + ball head will mean there is little chance of vibrations and the buggy will have rubber tyres anyway. Only thing is I need to find a way to make it move at a snails pace.

If I can do it with an RC car but have the RC car only move at a certain speed then I can literally drive the buggy through town centres/landscape scenes etc while it's timelapsing and then end result should be really cool.

I have just made massive amounts of extra work for myself now, so much to do, not enough time to do it all :o

The VideoMic arrived today and I did a little test to make sure there were no problems. Besides the fact the video quality wasn't very good (most likely a mixture of bad lighting and me not playing with camera settings) the audio sounded awesome.

Only problem I had with it is there's some interference in the background, like a crackling, my voice sounded fine! I'm thinking it may be because of my camera settings as I don't think it's external noise/vibrations. I do plan on trying it with the high pass filter to see if that makes a difference though, I will also change the PAD to +20. Will probably post a test video either once I work it out, or if I require assistance. :D

If it was the same for you when you got in mrk let me know how you got around it, fairly new to the whole video game (and photography game come to think of it).

What camera are you using it on? +20pad is useful if your camera allows you to lower the pre-amp on it which takes away the hiss at low volume for a nicer noise floor. If you're getting crackling it sounds like your pre-amp may be raised too high on the camera. Confirm this by plugging the mic into your PC's mic socket and testing the same recordings :)

The stereo mic is really cool especially for picking up sound differences between speakers on portable devices. I've realised I can use it on reviews too for this kind of thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUh0yYYMLyk&feature=player_detailpage&t=246

I'm using it with the Canon 600D, from what I've read the pre-amp onboard is terrible. Tried testing on the computer but it was so quiet so I couldn't do much of a comparison!

That Bluetooth speaker sounds pretty good! :O

I was also considering using Magic Lantern, I think you use Nikon cameras but do you think it'd be worth it?

I use both, personal cam is 5D3 :)

Magic Lantern is worth it if you use the features it has of course

By the looks of it, it will come in very handy when filming video. Going to have to have a play with Magic Lantern, the microphone and the video settings at the weekend!

For anybody interested, apart from the crackling/noise, the Rode VideoMic sounds great. I'm presuming the reason I have it is due to the 600Ds pre-amp, though I'm hoping that it can be sorted by changing the settings. :D

So I just got the chance to have another play today and... still having the same issue with the audio no matter what I do with the settings. Looking at getting an Attenuator to help reduce the amount of hiss/noise. Will let you know how that works out.

Hoping I can get this sorted by the start of September!

Edit: If this doesn't work I'm going to have to spend more money on an external audio recorder! May have been better off getting a 60D as I don't think they have any audio problems.

Sorry about the double post but if I do have to go down the route of an external recorder, is there anything you guys would recommend? Want to know what I want ahead of time just incase the Attenuator doesn't work. I was thinking along the lines of something like the Zoom H1 as I don't have tonnes to spend.

I also have some degree of noise with my newly acquired Rode Stereo VM. This is with a Nikon D5100 and this camera only has three sensitivity settings, or auto, and this mic does not have a +20db pad, so I'm a little stuck as to options. I need to test the lower two settings, as I had sensitivity on 'high', and just hope this will pick up the sounds I want, and lessen the noise.

I do have a Zoom H2 recorder, which I find to be very good, but wanted the ease of an all in one solution.

Of course you can use EQ to filter the high frequency and some of the noise, but this will also lose some of the top end sparkle, and make the sound a little dead.

The mic does sound very good, and a million miles better than the built-in, but I am a little disappointed... just glad it didn't cost too much.
