I need to upgrade / new build my wife's PC. She is mainly browsing the Internet and watching Netflix.

I was am leaning towards Intel, and an i3 like the i3-4160 rather than the Gxxxx processors as they seem faster and have hyper threading. Is this a overkill for her usage?

I am planning 8 GB of RAM, motherboard yet to be decided but likely something with a H97 chipset.

P.S. The monitor is a AOC Q2770 so I need pretty decent graphics resolution on DVI.

Thanks in advance for advice from my august fellow forum members.

An i3's a great option, I would also consider an AMD apu which in all honesty could be the better choice seeing as it has better on board graphics and more real cores, I'm presuming you don't want to add the expense of a graphics card so you'd be able to do a cheapish build with better graphics than an I3 which I presume is 4600 and you'll have no problem with whatever res you use.

Agreed. An AMD APU would be great for a web browsing / email / Netflix PC.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the AMD section. At this price point ( £ 100.00 ish) what socket / processor should i go for?

Not that she knows but he current build has a AMD 8750 triple core CPU. Remember them :)
