Ok my old kit fried recently but I have a limited budget and play a lot less these days. I have a back catelogue of games inc COD, Half Life 2 and Far Cry all unplayed!

So I am considering putting together a economical yet sufficient build.
The basic idea I have is based around:

MB-101-AS Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS) £56.95 £56.95

with probably
CP-175-AM AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-175-AM) £71.95 £71.95

and

GX-049-CO Connect3D ATI Radeon X1900 GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-049-CO) £119.95 £119.95

now to this I naturally need:

CPU Heatsink/Cooling
SATA Hard Drive
1Gb RAM
PSU
CASE

on the basis that my aim is to get back working, have some "life" in the build and spend less than 400-500 any recomendations or should I take another direction.

This could be suitable although for a bit over your budget you could get a Conroe chip and a small hard drive.
