Basic cheap CPU

I hope this upgrade isn't going to involve just a chip swap because there will be tears all round when the OP discovers socket 775 chips dont fit into socket 478 boards.

lol yup, a PIV 1.6 is likely s478, though i have seen a few 1.6GHz s423s as well. If the board/chipset and memory can handle it i'd say go for a 2.8 or 3Ghz Pentium 4, assuming its s478

You guys realy are overlooking thecedar mill celerons, theyre actually not half bad. 512K L2 cache on the netburst platform, so they perform similar to a northwood P4, with higher clocks, lower power consumpytion, extra instructions and they overclock like beasts.

Thank for the replys guys.

Just to clarify its for a new build (as the current rig is a S478 with old SD ram) thats looking @ coming in around £150ish (ex Case & PSU). Must admit i'm not really sure why they want to upgrade but its there money not mine ;)

No it won't. 500 and 600 series Pentium 4's were Prescott cores, LGA775. You seem to forget LGA775 has been going for almost 4 years now. Chances are the chipset won't support Core 2's, though. Sod's law ain't it? :p

Some Cely D's need 478, but the 65nm cedar mill cores are 775, from what I've seen they hit 4GHz on air easily.

Nope buddy, the chances of a P4 1.6GHz cpu being on a socket 775 is slim to none.

hmm, they still have the higher latencies associated with the Prescott core and less cache to make up for it, Northwood would likely thump it badly clock for clock.

Slightly better but not a great deal, and they can fairly easily be clocked up to 4-4.4ghz even on average air. This easily will make up for that pretty well.

Blimey.. i best shut up , or cut my legs off !! :D

:p

I got a retail 430 from OcUK for £17, once I get it clocked it'll be a great little chip for my HTPC.

I bought a Cel 440 from the Bgrade section for 17 quid, clocks to 3.6 and just breaks 20 sec in SPi 1m.

Nice, hopefully mine will do similar.

I just done a build for my sister using an x3600+, altogether it came to £153 (with case, mobo, psu, HD, ram, cpu, arctic freezer 64, 6500 256mb and dvd rom). It's plenty quick enough for everyday tasks and the odd older game, although if you have a little more in your budget a Core 2 based celeron or a 2140/60 would be ideal.
