I'm looking for a wee bit of advice, basically my old audio amp has given up the ghost so I figure it might be time to try and upgrade the system a bit!

I'm thinking this might be the time to get an av reciever and put the tv/ps3/audio through it, i originally thought I might just get a soundbar for the tv- but probably more potential with a reciever.

My idea is to have the basic setup and then add/replace components as money becomes available!

thinking my first purchase will be a reciever and a centre - been looking at some of the sub-200 quid recievers from richer sounds pioneer vsx322 looks pretty good for the money - but anyone have suggestions of maybe a second hand unit around that money that would be better

and i literally have no idea about a centre, hoping to get something around 100-150

any advice would be good!

If you are buying parts when funds allowed then start with 2.0

So AV receiver and a pair of speakers first. They do a good job in creating a sound field with a pseudo centre.

Then add a sub to 2.1

Now this is the tricky part. you can go 4.1 or 3.1 Personally I would save up so I can jump from 2.1 to 5.1

I did it the other way, I went from 2.0 to 5.0 and then 5.1. Although the time between 5.0 and 5.1 was only a few weeks.

well, I was planning on using the pair of speakers that I have at the moment as starters!
so add a centre into that, tbh I don't really have a place to put a sub at the moment, so that's a later addition when I get a new room!

You want the front three to match, otherwise it will sound quite odd. What are the speakers your using at the moment?

Tdl nucleus iirc:rolleyes:, certainly not the best but thought a centre would improve the overall feel of it then I can upgrade these speakers to match the centre at a later date...

Unfortunately it doesnt really work like that and it can make things worse. Also, what was your old stereo amp? a lot of the times older amps are actually very very good and produce a much better quality sound than a cheaper AV amp, which generally aren't brilliant.

My suggestion would also be to get a front three, or a front two and a sub if you want to go down the av route.

If it's a Marantz then it was probably a very decent amp in its time, and would certainly have produced a sound much better than a bottom of the range AV amp, especially at under £200 as you really are scraping the barrel.

Have you considered second hand?

Yammy 371 a little lower too, might be worth seeing which one you could get cheaper :P Very similar options though.
