Hello. My parents have finally decided they would like to be able to use the internet, do some e-mailing and, maybe, do some word processing. I'm looking for a new, inexpensive laptop which will be up to the task for them for the next few years. I'm not really looking for a C2D; paying the extra £100 or so for such a chip would probably be pointless, given their intended usage. So, I'm in the realms of Pentiums (dual core perhaps) and Celerons and have seen machines of each type for similar prices. So, an age old questions, what's the difference and which is better? Any suggestions will be well received.

Either look at the noteboooks which are available (wind, EEPC etc)

Or go for a nice cheap dell etc with a C2D. Please what ever you do, avoid the celeron chips as you are wasting your time.

The MSI wind, it has an Intel Atom ~1.6Ghz and will easily carry out the above tasks. Plus its ultraportable (sub 1.5Kg and 10" screen) and cheap ~ £300. Added bonus it has XP which is more friendly than vista/linux in my opinion to new computer users.

C2D chips arent actually £100 more... theres an acer laptop for £250 at your local black and green supermarket! Looked fairly adequate for basic stuff...good price aswell. but ** probs better off lookin at a laptop around £300 and find one that is a C2D as it will last longer. Oh and if they are interested in an MSI wind, there is the Advent 4211 which is the cheap version of this - only £250 I got it for! Was listed at £280 but an advert showed it to be £250 n had to speak to the manager to ensure it was discounted. Good laptop for its price though.

Thanks for the replies. Those little machines would probably do the deal in many respects, but for the physical limitations of the aged! My mother has severe arthritis in her hands and my Dad has macular degeneration (an eye condition) which means a bigger screen will be needed. So, C2D for less than £300, nice. I'll take a look. Thanks again.
