Basic grammar quick question.

Guys I forgot the term used in grammar when you attach a meaning to an ordinary word.

For example;

My special is always happy.

But special has been given the meaning 'wife'.

Bad example but i can't think of another.
 
Reviving this thread to ask a quick one.

How do you properly pronounce "Vauxhall"?

Some are saying it like "vocks hall", others are saying it like "vow ell". I haven't a clue. :o
 
I think the former is correct? (However, no space between the two words. "Vockshall")

It's how I pronounce it anyway. :cool:
 
I have never heard anything but the vox hall pronunciation, are you hanging around with some remedials.

Good idea actually. However for most of us, we already know how it's pronounced. ;)

I don't have the luxury of ever hearing anyone actually speak it, since I'm in the U.S. :p

The logic behind "vow ell", I guess, is because of words like "faux", where it's pronounced "fo". But this isn't France now, is it? :D

Vauxhall sounds like Vox-all if you're talking about cars.

But if you live there and want your address to sound posh, the other. Like Clapham amusingly became 'Clahm' among a select circle.
