Hey folks, as time goes on, and DVDs and Blu Rays become less used and digital media used more and more I wanted to have a simple setup that doesn't cost a huge amount to achieve the following .

Be able to move all my Dvd and Blu-ray discs to it, and then be able to access it from any TV in the house. Is this feasible on a low ish budget? I would rather not use my main pc as I don't keep that on all the time and so would prefer a fairly compact setup that I can put in a small cupboard.

Any advice appreciated

I archived a couple of hundred DVDs to a 2TB NAS drive before storing the physical media in the loft.

MakeMKV was the ripping program. I made 1:1 quality copies. The process allows the selection of what is ripped, so extras, trailers, alternative sound tracks and foreign languages can all be ditched. What I chose was the film, DD/DTS audio and English subtitles.

Playback is handled by an Android MX box running Kodi. The cost of the box was something like £40-£50 about 5-6 years ago. There are more powerful and cheaper versions now. The connection is via the house Wi-Fi, but the box has an Ethernet port too. Connection to the TV is via HDMI. The box is operated with the supplied IR remote control.

Kodi is a good tool for playback. It can be loaded on to a variety of platforms including Android and iOS tablets, smart phones and some plug-in media streamers as well as home computers and Android boxes. There are some decent 3rd party facilities to manage the library so that cover art and film info meta data is downloaded for each title.

MakeMKV includes the ability to rip BD discs so long as your PC has a BD drive and is powerful enough. A separate program called Handbrake can be used to reduce the file sizes using compression.
