Batch image recompression

As damn near all of us know, pictures from digital cameras are far larger than they need to be due to lack of processing power etc.

I generally use PSP5 on windows and imagemagic on Linux, but I've been asked to recommend something.

What freeware do people recommend for Windows 7 or is there something included??

"Powertoys for windows XP", this should work for any windows as far as I am aware, very small and easy and quick to use and free from Microsoft.

im pretty sure the microsoft one wont work on win 7

Irfanview does them.

I'm not entirely certain whether it's a good resizer though.

The powertoy option seems to be a resizer rather than increasing the level of jpeg compression

You can recompress the file in irfanview but you'd have to adjust the slider and do some testing to see just how much compression is acceptable to you. You could reduce the file size to 5% of the original but it would look quite blocky for example.

I use JPEG Resizer and despite it's name you can leave the size and only change compression ratio and it works fine
