Last night I noticed two bats flying laps in my garden  I am sure they were bats as I could see the shape of the wings quite clearly, they were flying circles and came within 3 feet of my head, I guess they thought the garden was their territory :p

Is it quite normal to spot bats in europe, I thought that they did not live here?

And on top of that there is a hedgehog that eats the cats food, it is almost a wildlife park behind my house :D

yer, you get bats all over the place mate :) there are loads all over the place in the uk and you will get them in amsterdam, there generally attracted to water iirc, due to the bugs and stuff you get around it.

I get pipistrelles flying low over the garden at late dusk, gobbling up the juicy flies just above head height. They're bloody quick though - if you weren't looking for them you probably wouldn't see them.

Yeah, they were very quick and very good at taking very sharp turns.

Makes me wonder how long they have been flying over my head without me noticing them, I was lucky not to have a bat in my hair :p

Get yourself in the Bat enclosure at Chester Zoo, now thats fun! amazing just how close they fly by your head, and some big ones as well.

I have bats too, I wonder if I could get a few pictures of them one night. They're a bit quick though.

What amazes me as well is how quiet they fly, their wings hardly make a noise, I could hear them last night when they were close as there was no wind.

just hope they don't take up residence in your loft.
they're a protected species and you can't evict them (legally).

:)

My next door neighbour has a bat sanctury in her attic... dad finds them annoying at they set off the sensor for the light

We've had bats wherever we've lived for as long as I can remember :)

We also had an infestation (?) of them in Scotland at my Grandparent's house.

he's a naughty boy then,
Bat offences are arrestable.

The potential fine for each offence is £5,000. If more than one bat is involved, the fine is £5,000 per bat. An offender can also be imprisoned for six months. On conviction the forfeiture of any bat or other thing by the court is mandatory, and items used to commit the offence (for example vehicles) may be forfeited.
taken from here.

We installed screens in the windows of the loft recently so they can't get in anymore

Would not be funny if I was in the middle of a game like DoomIII or Prey and a bat came flying thru the window and land in front of me or on my back biting my neck :o :D

Yeah, it's well good in there.

I used to always see bats when I walked home from an ex's house at night. Sometimes they'd fly right towards me and I could hear them cheeping away, then they'd suddenly change course to avoid crashing into my head. Smart little things.

Yeah, amazing that the are (nearly) blind and only fly using echo to 'see' where the objects around them are
