Battery Grips - 1st party or 3rd party?

yeah that's the only let down to it but im not that bothered about using the extra stutter release so haven't put the little cable on, I got it for the extra battery power and balance with lardger lens

How sturdy is it when attached? Is there slight wobble and also does it feel the same as the D5100?

it feels part of the D5100, even has the same pattern on it so it matches

I was looking at grips yesterday, as well as other accessories for the D7000 interesting. I'll take a deeper look in to it and read up further. Just a quick Q regarding the D7000, just purchased one myself too and the 18-105mm VR lens that came with it, the manual focus ring when turned is slightly squeaky . Is this a known normal issue? Its almost as if the ring is slightly too tight if you get me. Maybe I should ring up and see.

Merry Christmas :)

My Nikon 18-105mm doesn't squeak.

Thanks for the pic man, it looks great. I think I might end up getting one as the extra battery length, extra balance and extra cool looks outweigh the fact that the new shutter doesn't work.

I've got an official BG-E4 on my 5D classic as that's basically the only thing that's still available for them, and they're very cheap now anyway. Were I using a new body, particularly of the 5D3 variety, I probably wouldn't use an official grip simply because that would be about £200 for a piece of kit that basically hasn't changed since the BG-E4 which I have.

My basic thoughts are that if you're going to get a grip, get one that's made from the official mould or has been reverse engineer from a real one e.g. Meike. For a cheaper camera then sometimes the 3rd party ones are the only option - my Dad has one on his D5000 but he likes it (mainly I think, because he was getting ****ed off that my 5D was bigger than his camera, so he stopped taking it around on cameras haha). The shutter release on that one is definitely a different one than the Nikon one but it doesn't bother me too much - largely because even with the grip I just use it with my hand on the normal grip - I find that the eye's different position (relative to my hands) in portrait just feels weird.

I've got a 3rd party grip on my 30D and genuine on my 7D & there isn't any difference in look/feel. I only got the genuine one for my 7D because I'd heard rumours it didn't play nice with 3rd party grips (when the 7D first came out)

I use genuine on the 5d mk iii and 7d, I don't like the 7d one because it's not very ergonomic compared to the 5d mk iii. As good as the 5d mk iii one is, it is not as nice as the 1d series.

I think the main difference with some 1st vs 3rd party is the weather proofing (if there is any at all).

I use a 3rd party on my D700 and it gets used everywhere. I also use 3rd party batteries, but they only get used in the grip, the official Nikon one stays in the camera.

I have no complaints about it, works as it should, adds a nice little weight to the camera and makes it more managable. Works well with my homemade strap and with tripods. price difference was about £200 which allowed me to get some decent sandisk cards.

I always buy the Canon grips for my cameras. I just prefer knowing that there won't be any issues at all, other than the risk of physical failure as with any product.
