Battery powered router?

Basically I have a router that needs to be on all the time but I cannot keep it plugged in all the time

Is there soemsort of device that is BATTERY powered that can basically accept a UK mains plug and keep the router on all the time? I assume the router uses very little energy..

I am surprised somethign like this hasnt been created yet - is it impossible/not worth it?

UPS but far from ideal

I doubt it would be made as whats the point of a battery powered router what would power multiple laptops/pcs/xboxs'?
 
your best bet from what you've said is to look for some sort of UPS (I suspect even a cheapy one will do it), as they do pretty much exactly what you are after (they are meant to give you XX minutes of breathing time once the power goes off before a connected PC etc runs out of power).

From memory a router tends to only use about 20watts, so a UPS designed to run a PC (200+ watts) for an hour would probably see it lasting for 10 hours between charges.
Having said that i'm not really up on UPS's and don't know how long you would have the power off between charges.
 
I dont understand what your trying to do. Surely its providing an internet connection to something that's powered so what does it matter?
 
I have my main PC with router in my bedroom

all the other items that will be using the internet will be in other rooms and have their own pwoer supplies

its essentially to let other people use the inetrnet when my MAIN pc is off (and the router is off with it).

UPS soudns good, my PC is usually on ofr a coupel of hours a day - so I guess that it would charge it up each day liek a regcrageable battery or something?

thing is how owudl it differentiate the router as being off (i.e i want it to be off) or it having actuallyl ost power? woudl it need to be seperate from all my other plugs?

(its wireless, of course!!!)
 
I must be missing the problem but, plug the router into a different mains socket ? Or get one of those gangs of sockets that you can have trailing or fixed to the wall that is switched, switch off the PC outlet as desired & leave the router on. ?
 
why not just... plug it into a socket you dont turn off with the pc? - or leave the sockets turned on and just switch pc off at the psu switch, if theres a powercut no one else will be using it anyway. and most routers get booted up faster than pc's anyway

Im confused? do you have your router running off of your PC or something? Do you switch it off at the wall every time you turn it off? Just stick your router into a different socket?
 
Having your router and/or switch connected to a UPS is brilliant. If a power cut fails and you're moving/copying files you can just continue (if your PC's on on the UPS too)

As for the original question, a UPS will do however the battery in the UPS won't last forever, you'll need mains connected eventually.

yes i read this too? sounds like a usb modem he is on about and i dont get why even destroying your computer with a hammer would effect the router in the slightest considering it is totally independent thing...

so do you have a network with your pc being the server for the others, if so it must be on and thats not a router.

do you have a router that if connected to same extention and u turn it all off , in that case change it.
 
Standard ethernet router.

Its on an extension with my normal PC. The PC is off most of the day but the router must stay on all day

Connecting it to a seperate plug would be what I would do, but at the moment that isn't possible.

If I have a UPS on an extension with the router on the UPS and everythign else on the normal extension - when I kill the supply to the extension will the UPS keep the router going? (it will be connected to the extention rather than directly to the plug)
 
When the power has cut out and my laptop has switched to battery I have wished several times for a battery powered router or modem so the internet doesn't die!

Ditto, and nowadays a lot of people use wireless phones which cease functioning without a power supply, so a UPS could be a very worthwhile purchase.
