Battle.net App A Requirement To Play WoW ???

So I went to install WoW today on a separate computer, Downloaded the installer from the account page and it launched the battle.net app, Since when was this a requirement ?

also gives you all the news on there patches & games. Don't like Blizzard that much but they did do a good job on this.
