Yep, brilliant film.

What do you mean but, subs are a hundred times better than dubs ;)

Agreed. I like Battle Royale, but it's nothing amazing. Just a unique story told very well. I'm sure i watched some of the 'behind-the-scenes' stuff and the director is really frighteningly stern with some of the kids (who'd possibly never acted before?). To the point that it put me off a little!

I dont think its that great.

I don't understand how people on this forum instantly like a film more, simply because its Asian. If it was American, it wouldnt get the same response. As a westerner watching an Asian film, it simply allows the covering up of bad acting average plots, poor special effects and other things that a Hollywood film simply could not get away with.

'Its ok, because its Asian!'

Its far from a bad film, but its far from a great one as well.

I think it's an excellent film personally, 2nd one is lame :o , one of my favourite asian films. If you like this you should watch Azumi.

I dont think any Western director could possibly pull off such a story, though. It's the 'crazy Asians' that have the imagination, and can. I dont think you can say it's an 'average' plot? Anyway, if Hollywood tried to make a film like that, it would fail miserably. It's not because it's Asian, its 'better', it's just that those type of stories simply dont exist over here.

I posted in another thread about why i like foreign films a lot.. reading the subtitles makes sure you're concentrated, and sucked properly into the film's world. Sure, maybe it means we miss some bad acting, but who cares? There's no problem with that. It's better than watching Jessica Simpson in the latest 'comedy' eat the furniture (or whatever the phrase is).

As for your last point, i agree. It's not amazing, but its a enjoyable film.

Admittedly I wasn't reffering to Battle Royale specifically with the average plot. I do agree that many Asian films do show some imagination that Hollywood has been lacking of late.

But, for example, lets take the cult film 'Cube', a relatively low budget sci-fi action/horror, that has got a fairly original plot. If you replaced all the actors with Asian ones and made it a completely Asian films, I have no doubt that it would get the same, if not a greater response to Battle Royale in the western world.

I hope you can see my point. :)

I think that's partly suspension of disbelief... That sort of thing happens all the time in Japan, you know. Massive cube full of deathtraps? I think I stayed there when I was in Tokyo.

Hollywood is ruled by nepotism and financial greed. The people who are really passionate about making films are blocked from entering the industry.

I have no idea why everyone always ***** on about this film! Ok its a good film, but hardly amazing, someone tell me what is so good about it apart from lots of violence?

It's a pretty good film which I enjoy watching from time to time, though from the orient I would prefer to watch one of Miike Takeshis films ;)
I have only seen Ichi the Killer, and it was fairly poor. Another example as why I'm always skeptical of how a western audience will view an Asian film.
