I had to minimise the Battlefield 2 screen tonight and this was there...

WTF.jpg

I have never ever ever had that message before, I then Googled it and it said something about a Memory leak

I then looked in the Task Manager and BF2.exe looked like this...

WTF2.jpg

Could anyone help me? I have 1GB RAM and a XFX 7600GT XXX
Why is Battlefield 2 using so much virtual memory?
and was Battlefield 2 the cause for that message in the taskbar?
What can I do to fix this? I am also using the BF2 Patch version 1.4 (530MB one)

Thanks so much!

Try turning down your graphics settings, the higher they are set the more memory you will use. Invest in an additional gig of ram if you can.

I am keeping Norton :D

I will try the settings down, shouldnt a 7600GT be able to handle all settings on medium?

Why? Is is one of the worst antivirus systems you can get, it hardly ever scores 100% detection rates in the latest virus tests, unlike nod32 and kapersky. Yet it uses more system resources.

I'm running BF2 on a 7600GT with FULL detail on and it runs fine. I have 2gb RAM though and that makes a HUGE difference. Maps load quicker, no slow down in games, just works much better!

I agree with the points made about norton. It is poop!

also, playing on a dodgy hp pc wont help either :D

lol ta mate

Looks like I will have to invest in another GIG of RAM when I get my student loan then.

Would upping my RAM to 2GIG stop this message?

Windows uses Virtual Memory when it runs out of Physical Memory. Having more physical RAM will help a lot. You need to also look at what apps are running in task manager and try to get rid of a few - like acrobat reader updater, java updater, real player updater etc... loads of little apps eating 4-5mb each soon add up.

Not if you run on full settings, I still get the odd virtual ram warning on SF with 2 gigs.

What is SF mate?

Good job I did up my RAM, my free physical memory this time 3 months ago was 180MB now it is 580MB *phew*

Well i dont have SF and running vanilla BF2 on full settings on my PC has never displayed an Virtual memory warnings at all. Sure you got your virtual memory set at the right level? What else you running at the same time as BF2?

I've never had it happen in vanilla either. It only really happens if the PC has been on a while and I've been running graphics packages. I always reboot for a match but I do run on medium/high graphics settings even for matches, which I probably shouldn't.

try turning your graphic settings down within the game

look in the game and see what your fps are. and see if they get better the more graphic options you change.

To see fps
When in BF2 go to console. (Hit tide key)

type renderer.drawfps 1

and you will see it top left.

As for freeing up memory, people are very right advising you to get shot of norton, trust us m8. It uses so much memory resources.

There are lots better AV software out there. Try it
