Battlefield 2

A 9800pro should do a pretty decent job of it, but a FX5200 would be very slow, and probably get about 10-15fps in a 64 man battle.

A second hand 9800pro if you can dig one up should be a very decent investment.

It really does depend on the required resolution. I doubt a 9800pro will handle it at 1600x1200+ even on lowest settings. 1280x1024 or lower should be good though.

I think I was using 800x600 on the ti, it had no lag mainly because half the textures werent loaded due to being incompatible. Here are some old screenshots I posted up at the time, recovered using search.

On a 9800pro which I use now I get a lot of lag at the start of rounds but none after and Iam on medium everything, it needs 1 gig of ram. I run using 1152x864

to clarify, with my 9800pro, i get about 60fps with all on medium, the draw distance at 90% and the res at 1280x1024

on 16player single player (no lagg to slow the framerate see)

however on a 50 or 64 player map in action itll probably drop to about 25fps like mine did.

i didnt read all the thread but instant crashing back to desktop is caused by the refresh rate not being set to 60hz as default. default it to 60hz with a refresh rate locker then change the res once in a the game

@geiger, they look absolutely shocking. i didnt realise that bf2 didnt scale well on older hardware quite as bad as that

That's because he's running on a non PS1.4 card.

I ran BF2 on a ATi 9100IGP chip (64MB shared RAM) and it ran at 30fps+ and looked better than that. It's just because his card is missing a major feature that most of the textures are missing; it's not meant to run at all on that card.

whats the crazy coding in the map window

lol, no idea. Its the screwed up graphics basically, the blue streaks of death were fun too and dont mention the invisible tanks (they are the most complex objects in the game - see screenshot :D ). Some guy got it into his head to convert all the pixel shader code over. I really liked his spirit to say what the hell, I can do what EA megabucks gimps cant.

He almost achieved it but some of the code really couldnt convert, the complex shell shock affect for example was impossible on the older technology, without rewriting the main source code which was never an option.

All the gameplay was there anyway and the fps was smooth but the graphics sucked especially when it can be so fine on a slightly newer card.

I play the 9800pro on 64 player servers and its definetly true that this produces the most workload especially with many people on screen but its almost always fluid at 30fps and much more usually.
My refresh rate is 100 in windows and 85 in the game, what should I be locking ? I use the omega drivers

minimum spec id say is from a 6600 upto 6600gt/6800LE/NU. my 6800nu plays it pretty damn well.
dont get a 2nd hand 9800pro they always die and are just that little bit too slow to run a big game like this. 9700's and 9600's are just too slow to bother thinking about.

I wouldn,t recommend anything less than a 9800pro for BF2 and if i wanted to be sure my son was happy for the next year i would invest in an X800series card.
Fortunetly your post count just allows access to the members market.
Head in there and pick up a 9800pro for 50 quid or a X800pro for 125quid.
The 9800 will play BF2 very well at the lower resolutions and settings and gameplay will be good enouth for long term play.
Spend the 125 and you'll put your son in eye candy heaven till well beyond xmas.
I have to be honest and say that if you skimp on a GFX card any money you spend will be wasted. Rather than get lost in a fantasy world of eye candy heaven your son will be lost in a world of frustration and tweaking.
Finally i will add that the X800 for 125 quid is fantastic value and after experiencing it i am pretty sure you will get some moneys worth out of it as well.
All in all a fantastic buy at the moment.
