Anyone upgraded from 1GB Ram to 2GB who plays BF2?

Was thier a noticeable difference?

I have a Dell Dimension 5150 system that has 1GB already installed (2x 512 Samsung m378t6553cz3-cd5) and the motherboard has four slots and as per usual the Dell site does not state ANYTHING about the motherboard what so ever.

However the Dell i'm unsure if installing two more 512MB's of the same type would actually help, might actually hinder.

On a budget would it be best to get two new 1GB modules, or a single 1GB or whack in two more 512MB's of the same?

If there is actually a noticable difference of 2GB with BF2?

i'm pretty skint just now after buying another system for the wife the other day.

when i first got it i had 1gb - did stutter abit, upgraded to 2gb all is well

checking my peak commit charge in task manager after a game BF2 uses just over 1.5gb of RAM on my system

Full on graphics on the larger maps BF2 can eat up 1.4gb+ of ram, so it would be used for sure.

As for your dell, I doubt it would hinder performance, 2x 1gb sticks is usually the best one to go for.

As long as you have textures on medium, you'll be more or less fine with 1gb of RAM. I've got that, and there's some slight stuttering at the start of a game but once you're in it's fine :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

2 gig == win.

Never regretted the outlay. BF2 loves having two gig (go for another 2x512 sticks), as does Windows, and it improves the load times in a lot of games. Of course some will say that your BF2 load times will decrease if you lower everything to medium, but where's the fun in that? I have everything on except stupid amounts of AA.

Ive only had a quick play with 2gb and the start of the maps appear smoother now.

Annoyingly Windows doesnt seem to use up more than 400Mb of it when Im doing stuff on the pc.

Whats everyones page file set to?

Well i had a qiuck game last night with all settings on high and left the taskmanager on in the background. It used 1.5GB of Paging File so i'm glad i just bought the extra ram.

2 Gig.
Nuff said close thread. :D

Ok ok. I started playing BF2 on day of release with 1 gig. Had to go low to get it smooth and only had a good gaming experience on up to 32 man maps.
Got 2gig of geil value slung it in whacked it up and am in eye candy heaven with Complete smooth running on 64 man maps.
With the price i got for my 2x512 sticks the upgrade cost next to nowt.

I rest my case.

Now close the thread. :D

Completely.

I played this for ages on 1gb and it jumped and skipped etc.. load times were also painful.

Went to 2gb recently and it's a whole different game.

If you are thinking of upgrading to 2gb just for bf2 then I highly recommend it!

1.5gig is the minimum for good performance in BF2 unless you sacrifice something on visuals. Lots of people claim it is 'fine' with only 1gig, but that's because they don't know any better.

Other games such as FEAR, WoW, Boiling Point and Freespace 2 all benefit from over 1gig of RAM.

Personally I'm struggling along with 1gig RAM because I don't play many games with such hefty memory requirements, and I tend to run very few background tasks. I'd prefer more memory of course but my current sticks run at 231mhz CAS2 which is hard to get from a value 2gig set. I can live with the fact that some games will have longer load times and occasional paging, or I have to use reduced texture settings - but that doesn't mean I'm not aware that 1gig is definitely sub-optimal in the current day and age.

Freespace 2 uses over 1gb of ram? Dont think so somehow. Last time I played it (about 3 years ago) it didnt use more than 256mb max everything.
