Battlefield2 with 1 or 2GB Ram?

When ive played BF2, ive always had 2GIG ram.

Obvously, with 1gig ram, you will get stutters and stuff, you cant go wrnog with 2gig, im sure it will smoothen everything out, and make game play a bit nicer!

With 1GB RAM I had fairly long loading times, first 20 sec or so was unplayable and when flying across maps I had annoying hitches which could often cause me to crash.

With the same detail settings with 1.5GB (and later 2GB) RAM I'm one of the first to load everytime with my aging Athlon XP and have 0 hitching. I can even turn the detail up a bit as well.

Peak RAM usage today was 1.25GB with everything medium, 2xAA @ 1280x1024 so it's not just needed with high detail textures.

Freespace 2 uses over 1gb of ram? Dont think so somehow. Last time I played it (about 3 years ago) it didnt use more than 256mb max everything.

Yes, Freespace 2 DOES use over 1gig RAM if you are running fs2_open with all the 3rd party addon effects etc enabled and everything cranked up to the max.

Sure out of the box it will use hardly any RAM, cos it's a 1999 game, but as it is open source now, the game is still (unofficially) in development by various people (latest release under a month old), and you DO benefit from over 1gig RAM, because there are some seriously OTT textures and effects available.

Note that I never said that you NEED over 1gig RAM to play the game, just that it helps.

i used to play bf2 with medium textures, sometimes the ram was over full and textures would disappear ect, on 2gig texture are on high its smoother than before, my pc is faster in general i can exit to desktop while playing. 2gig for the win. end thread.

I have 1GB of PC3200 RAM. When everything was at high on bf2 1024x768, 4xAA, 8xAA It did stutter. But Now I have textures at Medium everything else on High same AA and AF and Res, doesn't stutter at all. Hell, it even loads me in quicker now.

I used to have an old P4 2.66GHz with HT, 512mb RAM, and a 9800SE.
I put 2 gig in and BF2 was sooo much smoother. I could have everything pretty much maxed, even with a 9800SE. The extra RAM really does help with BF2.

1.5gig is the minimum for good performance in BF2 unless you sacrifice something on visuals. Lots of people claim it is 'fine' with only 1gig, but that's because they don't know any better.

I have used it on 1, 1.5 and 2GB and while i agree it is better on 2GB, as long as you turn a couple settings down to medium its completely fine on 1GB.

That's why I said "unless you sacrifice something on visuals" :) When I played BF2 I made sure that at least textures were down to medium because I only have 1gig RAM. But I've seen people on here claiming it be 'smooth as butter' on max settings etc.

Other games such as FEAR, WoW, Boiling Point and Freespace 2 all benefit from over 1gig of RAM.

Personally I'm struggling along with 1gig RAM because I don't play many games with such hefty memory requirements, and I tend to run very few background tasks. I'd prefer more memory of course but my current sticks run at 231mhz CAS2 which is hard to get from a value 2gig set. I can live with the fact that some games will have longer load times and occasional paging, or I have to use reduced texture settings - but that doesn't mean I'm not aware that 1gig is definitely sub-optimal in the current day and age.

Only BF2 actually. For FEAR 1 GIG is enough.

I have everything set to high with 4xAA and I still get silly a FPS.

Spec:

A64 Venice 3200+ @ 2.2GHz
BFG GeForce 7800GT OC
2GB GeIL value RAM.

I could run everything high (Apart from Textures) with 2xAA when I had a 6800LE.

Check drivers. Also run fraps to see how it goes. Some people actually have lag issues instead which seem like fps issues.

Well, Ive been on for a bit tonight, it is a noticeable difference, espescially when spawning etc, no loading etc. I wouldnt say its fantastic, my peak mem usage was around 1.2gb going from task man.

Whats the performance difference from 2Gb running 2T in dual channel to 1.5gb 1T running single channel? I am guessing dual channel makes a fair difference over 2T?

i have always used 2GB, i know there is a noticable difference in loading times, and also when you join a game, and there is that small lag at the start when Punbuster is scanning you, you wont notice it as much with 2GB it is quiet noticable with 1GB.
